   Shopkeepers

A definite minority in the country. In larger towns and cities they would run general merchandise shops. I always preferred buying things from them when I could because they didn't barter as much as the Indians did. The nearest Chinese family to QVS was Phoo's (Pua) who ran the New Tong Lee bakery. He was always half asleep and always with a cigarette, usually in his mouth. Philip Low, part-Chinese, ran the Kam Lee shop at the Natovi wharf. Susi White had a half-Chinese cousin, Bui, who lived near Natovi.
