Gurmit Singh | |
While Gurmit is technically a Sihk he became my first "Hindu" friend, offering to teach me Hindi and I helped him with his English. He came around weekly selling vegetables and fruit to the compound staff. She showed me all of native plants in my garden. He gave me the best cucumber I have ever had, so crisp that I can't describe it.
He would come around Saturdays to watch the movie with the boys.
I could always find time for him. Showed him his first jig-saw puzzle. He played an autoharp.
As soon as he got to New Zealand he ditched the turban and went with western dress. He had a job on a farm near Hamilton. We visited him there in May 1973. He eventually got off the farm
and married a Maori, Iana and they visited us in 1975.
