2001 - No. 1
It's a Small
World...
Gail and I went to the opposite side of Auckland to visit Christine and Nick duFresne for the first time and to see what they are doing with their house.  One week later I drove into Auckland to pick up Titania and then we went to get the Opoutere place keys from Nick.  So I pull into his driveway and Titania says, pointing to a building across the road, “That’s where Stephanie lives!!!”.  So we went over to surprize her.  In a city with a population of a million, what are the odds that we have friends living next door to each other?
Fast forward to October and Stephanie is now living with us since her return from France. Ne brings her over to meet Berthe.  Turns out that Berthe knows the parents of Stephanie’s friend, Walter. They had known each other in Holland. We are now talking about 2 people living on the opposite side of the world end up in New Zealand and then a third person from Europe turns out to be a connection.  Wait, there’s more. Turns out that Stephanie actually knows one of Berthe’s sons.
The 2000 Christmas season at 33 Colombo Rd in Waiuku was great and, in looking back, Gail said it was the best summer ever.  Yes, folks I did say, summer which is what we have in New Zealand.  It was a non-stop week or so for us.

Not a great beginning for me on the 24th — as I was in bed with a migraine up until Aldies arrived at 5PM.  And it was raining, so we were shunted upstairs for coffee, a meal and gift exchanging with Nao included.  Trish gave me this rat in a trap which is sound activated into a frenzied attempt to escape…

Christmas Day found the de Villiers and Needham’s over for a barbeque.  I played cricket and had a session in the pool with the boys.

Highlight was Boxing Day.   Whites came over en masse, as is the tradition, and they were joined by the Brundells (for the very first time).  Loads of fun.  We had Edna do the official opening of “Brundell Bush” (see below).   Another barbeque followed by games and gifts. I gave Matthew a book “Beginner’s Guide to Collecting Socks” (see below).

On the 27th Stephanie stopped in with Walter. We then had the ten-pin rematch and I beat Nao by getting two strikes in the 10th of the second game.  And I did it with a bum knee. I had torn a ligament in my right knee a couple weeks earlier and had been limping around.  Just my luck as it cut down on my surfing for the summer, too.   Up to Needham’s on the 28th for a few hours on the computer followed by a soak in their hot tub.  Home for an evening of Rock n Roll Scattergories with Doug.  Ne and Nao went camping on the 29th while we hosted our Trivial Pursuit group.   After a normal game we played the After-Dinner Mint version.

December 30th my computer crashed and I lost all my programs and so I spent the next two days rebuilding it.  Ne and Nao came back on 31st, and Nao went to Auckland leaving Ne high and dry forever.  Brundell came over for a meal and when he left at 7PM I went to bed and didn’t get up until 11AM the following year.  So you could say that New Year’s Eve was a bit of a fizzler.

"Sock it
to me!"
David paid for my computer services by giving us about a hundred trees, bushes, plants. They just sat around waiting for me to get out of bed. Luckily, Brundell took charge, killed the pasture growth, drilled holes, planted the trees etc…, fertilized and supplied us with wood chips for ground cover. He did everything.  So we had a ceremony to open it officially on Christmas Day.  Click to see the photos Muse no more. I have solved the mystery of the missing sock—you know where you put two into the wash and only one comes back.   They run away and hide in Matthew’s room.  How else can you explain the 63 socks found lying about his room.
