Ne's SHOCK SECRET
Ne was not enjoying the pressures of 7th Form at Rosehill. Six subjects, each with a heavy workload of assignments. Instead of buckling down and getting "stuck in", she did less work and began skipping classes. Only trouble was it was no secret. I knew, the dean knew and her teachers knew that she was not coping. She finally discussed her concerns with the art teacher that she felt most comfortable with. Then the dean joined in and together they decided that she should see the school's guidance councilor who was very helpful and after a few phone calls and faxes, had arranged an interview for Ne at Manukau Polytechnic for the very next day. This all happened in a rush, problem coming to a head and its resolution all within 48 hours. The course is Foundation Studies in Visual Arts and Ne was accepted. It's the first year it is being offered and it is a full-year course being squeezed in from 26 April to 2nd Dec. Luckily for Ne she was able to get in at the last minute. Unluckily for her, since it is crammed into a shorter period of time she won't be getting the six weeks holidays like David. But she does get one week off in Sept.EXCLUSIVE Ne reveals :I ride the bus So just like that her whole life changed without a chance to think about it. One day she is in high school across the street and the next day she taking public transport to a strange campus halfways between here and Auckland (where David goes). There are 16 others in her group and they spend all day together. Ne describes them as "Surfies", "Samoans" and "Spacies". One boy is from Rosehill. Made it a little easier to having someone she kinda knew. There is a special bus to the school which leaves Papakura at 7:43AM, so poor Ne has to leave here before 7:30 (usually gets a lift with Gail to the depot). This, the same girl who found it impossible to get to Rosehill by 9AM. Her class starts at l0AM so she spends the extra time in the "studio". Classes go until 4PM and she gets home by 5:30PM. A long hard day. | JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED Last year both kids applied for a job at Georgie Pie and David got one. Well, McDonalds opened up in Papakura this April and Ne made it through to second round of interviews, but didn't land the job that 400 other teenagers also wanted. Not to worry because the exact same time that she was busy leaving school she got a job. And she got it the way most jobs are had...its not what you can do it's who you know. A boy that she was hanging out with told his employer he knew someone when the opening came along. She never even spoke to the company. The boy just picked her up one day and brought her to work where she had a trial as did another girl. This time Ne won out.And so, now on weekends she makes cotton candy at Rainbow's End amusement park. It's about 12 miles north of us. She generally gets a lift with one of three boys that she knows from Rosehill. One is her former boyfriend, one is her current and the other of all things is the same boy she has in her class at Tech. He started working at RE the same day that Ne did. What a super coincidence. She does more than just selling cotton candy, but that is her main function in life. Sells other items and also will rotate to the other concessions and games-of-chance stands, if required. Its excellent money for the work and probably more interesting than slaving away in McD's. So in one week everything fell into place for her. She has money to spend. But more important she is happy with what she is doing with her schooling. Why I Hate CROSS-STITCH Gail, for some obscure reason, is taking an embroidery class this year. So each Wednesday evening she heads on out the door with her thread and needles and says that she is going to Rosehill with Kathy Sanders. But judging from how little stitching she has managed to complete on her "sampler" I have to be a bit suspicious that there is another man. Stay tuned for future developments. |
