Jun 16, 1970. Heasley brings a puppy home. Boys had been hiding it on cliff. It was pitiful looking with a green slimy sore on its body. We set it up on an indoor concrete step with a windup clock - tick tock... You know who ended up taking take of it.

Jun 20, 1970. Named the puppy Congressman Ghetto so I could complain to her about Nixon and US politics. She follows me everywhere and likes to sleep at my feet. It took a long time to get healthy and she had a bout with green pus. Old Arthur Humphreys used to look at her and shake his head in pity.

But not only did she turn out well, but strong enough 3 litters amounting to 28 puppies. A few of those ended up with owners at the school or nearby villages. There was "Lucifer", "Ching Pang" (went to Qoma) and Hipi.

When she went into heat, several male dogs showed up, so I kept her in the the backporch, but a dog ripped out the screen window. So then I chained her up in the kitchen at night with that door closed.

One of favorite memories is seeing her dragging a large cow leg bone (from the farm below) up the steep road to our place.

Feb 4, 1971. Jo asked Epi which "house" Ghetto was in, thinking is was a nickname for a student.

Mar 29, 1971. Ghetto has 8 puppies - they are bigger than I expected. She dug a "nest" out the front door. I built them a shelter. Gave one to Parauni - he named it "Hipie". Hargrove took a puppy and named it "Caeser". Kulaia (molie seller) stole a pup. I gave "Senator Shambles" to Whites.

Oct 31, 1972. We brought Ghetto and Rufus to SPCA in Suva to be speyed.

When we left Fiji Susi's father brought her to his village but she ran away. Eventually ended up with the Rams who took her in.

Two years later when we returned for a visit, I walked to the perimeter of the Ram's property and gave her my whistle. She looked up, saw me, ran her legs off, lept and bowled me over. I think she was happy to see me again.
