I taught Mike in 1973 - but to be honest I don't remember that. He was captain of the first 15. In 1980 Mike and Sandy rented our house. We kept in touch over three years with tennant-landlord matters. Upon our return to Godzone we discovered that we shared so many passions and that was that. Michael understands that good wine needs to be appreciated. But I can't understand why he feels compelled to tear and rip the labels off the empty bottles. More your typical player of rugby, he did end up on "Pink Floyd", a basketball team that played more like a first 15. He once stole the show when he played the caretaker in "Happiest Days of Our Lives" in a school production, which was type casting as he used to clean the school buildings during term breaks.
Mike's true love (after family - a house full of girls) is racing, automotive. He could very well be New Zealand's authority on the subject, writing for magazines, speaking about it on radio and conducting tours to overseas races (off to Indianapolis this month for the US Formula 1). In 1994 he was chairman of the Pukekohe race track. That should be enough to impress the socks off you, but this young man (don't let the bald head mislead you about his age) practically knows everything. We have enjoyed a few Trivial Pursuit evenings with him, so I know that of which I speak. Sports, national flags, US state capitals, Beatles, company logos, Lithuanium poets, poets on lithium.... He is known in certain circles as "The Legend" - something to do with his ability to consume massive amounts of alcohol. And as generally happenings, legends hang out, so it is no surprize that Mike grew up with Manurewa legend, Wayne Anderson. He took care of Graham McRae when he went over the edge.
Not a rugby league fan, but he joined me and Gail in 2005 for a Kiwi - Kangaroos match.
In 2007 his dream came true. He bought a race car and had it shipped over from California, bought some blue suede shoes and became a honest-to-God race car driver. And just like anything he puts his mind to, he became a champion driver in 2010.
In 2008 he had dinner with Sterling Moss. Oh, and he also authored Bruce McLaren – A Celebration Of A Kiwi Icon
