I first met up with this mild-mannered young man on the job. Shared a cubicle with Tomboy for a year or so (he was the smart one
who got out from The StPaul® and found another life in the wonderful world of computing). He ended up in Agri-biz (Dairy Herd Improvement Association and then Harvest States Cooperatives) and never looked back - in fact he only looks east for some strange reason.
Oh yeah, the Yankees. He grew up in Rhode Island so he loves his Yanks and maybe even, secretly, the Twins. He has a degree in Biology. It was only this past summer that he decided to hang up his softball shoes.
We had the Peace Corps in common. He was in Ghana before he grew the beard. He ahd a bad strecth of malaria while there. I was honored to be his best man at an outdoor ceremony on a farm near Verndale, back in '83. In 1984 he was offered a job in Montana but turned it down. When not at work he used to play "Zorro": ride horses and wave an epee about. I liked Tom so much that I let him buy our station wagon when we left
the States in 1985 - and we are still friends! In 1986 they were almost killed by a leaking furnace. He and his wife came down to NZ in 1988 and hung out with
us for a couple weeks. In 1993 he gave two seminars at Cornell.
Update 2008 - Tom and Kathy were divorced in 2003. Tom remarried, Cheryl, and now has a skiing step-son, Max. He also has a seedy job these days and can be found pushing a hockey puck around. Update 2011 - He was in Holland investigating a company's IT system. | ||
