Squeaky |
August 18, 1060: Kincy and I found a skinless wee little baby squirrel that must have fallen out of a cottonwood. He decided to keep it. I think his mother didn't agree and I ended up with it. It was cool watching it grow bigger and grew fur. My mother bought a vertical bird cage for him that I kept in my room. I would let him out and the cat loved to chase him, and he would scurry up the drapes and sit on the top out of reach. He once chewed through my television power cable and didn't die. When spring came I released him. He hung around in one of the trees and set up home inside the garage. When I walked home from the bus as soon as I hit Roed's yard he would come dashing along the ground to me. Up my body and circle around my neck and end up in my shirt pocket. He bit Angi and she had to get a tetanus shot. One day Johnny Windom found a weak squirrel and brought it to us. We could tell that it was Squeaky because a door had closed on his tail and the tip was bent. My mom brought him to the vet who gave him a shot of something. We kept him in the cage until he recouperated. The following year (June 21, 1962) I discovered him in our garage again, but this time with a wife and babies. He was very protective and wouldn't allow me to get close. We moved away and never saw him again. But Mr Breth said that there was squirrel living in his garage and maybe it was Squeaky. Many years later I went with Bob Hansen hunting squirrels which were cooked for supper. I had a real hard time eating that. |
