Table Mountain 11-12 Jan 1987
Gail dropped David and me off at road's end and from there we walked along a gravel road following the river until we had to go over a hill which brought us to a swingbridge. Followed K. River to a spot from which it was basically straight up. Passed two older couples on way down who told us it was steep atthe top and too not go across Table Mountain. Then a young couple came down - she was in a bikini. We struggled upwards with plenty of stops. We had to hand pull on roots and vines when we got to the steep section. Making it to the top of Mt Rowe we found it was a bog but there was a log path cutting through the very tall grasses. Ten minutes of twists and turns and we ended up at a beautiful site.

Just like the sign said it had been a 3 hour climb to Moss Creek Hut, stream and kauri dam with a view of Whitianga. Hut had 24 bunks and we were the only two there that night. Running water, coal stove, gas burner stove for cooking and a hot water tank!!! ;We were better off than done at the campsite. We had supper (add boiling water to this and that) and got the fire going. I read outside until the sun went down. We played gin and 500 until bed.

Simple breakfast, clean up and we left Moss Creek Hut on Mt. Rowe at 9:30. One and a half hour through marsh to get to Table Mountain. Then 2 hours get across it - had to climb, jump, swing on vines from stump to stump. We managed to do the whole trail without having to walk in the deep bogs.

An opening on the top with a view of Wainora Camp, otherwise we were under trees the whole way. Steep down trek. Met two teenagers who had been at Waiawau hut (one carrying a bed mattress!!). We told them what to expect on the top and the younger one didn't want to go on. When we hit the Wainora trail it was still down but not so steep. Past two kauris and crossed a few streams and zig-zagged until we ended back in the campground.
