Katoomba to Dubbo |
Lovely day. We did the Three Sisters walk and were able to descend to a spot
on the biggest limestone spire. The treetops in the valley below us were covered by clouds (video). From there we went on the Skyway which is gondola trip over a gorge carved out by
Katoomba Falls. Was safe but exciting hanging from a wire in a cage that allowed you to see down into the abyss (video). Then we decided to do the Scenic Railway - not so much scenic as steep at 45°
through a chasm. Miners and loggers used it, orginally. The ride down to lower platform and up was quick and short and almost as good as a ride at a fun park (video). There were many parrots feeding at the landing.
We drove to the Zig-Zag railway, but it was an hour's wait so we gave it a miss and drove out of the Blue Mountains into rolling hills and then the great plateau and Bathurst where people reverse into diagonal parking (video) - its also famous for its annual car race, Australia's version of the Indie 500. At Orange we did a side trip to Mt Canobolas. We drove out of the heat to the top (1400m) and had to put our winter gear on as there was a frigid wicked wind at the summit. Gave a panaramic view to all horizons (video). We wanted to do a bush walk and check out bird life but it got dark very fast. So we drove through to Dubbo, again discovering that places were full. School holidays and Dubbo is home to a large safari park zoo. Managed to get into the Gallop Inn Motel for $55 (video). Pizza Hut where a group of 12 loud girls kept the place on edge. |
