Espresso: 1. I always thought it was "Expresso". 2. Rochè said that when he retired he wanted to be a barista working out of van. 3. On 18 Jun 2024 Gail taught me how to use our machine. I would never make one for myself, but should company drop in and Gail wasn't home.... |
I go out of my way looking for products with coffee as an ingredient. The list includes candy, yoghurt, breakfast cereal, chocolate bars, liqueurs (especially Tia Maria) and ice cream. |
I would love to visit a coffee plantation that processes the beans (wait a minute - I must point out that they aren't "beans" but rather "seeds"). Lucky Newsy and wife were able to tour one in Coasta Rica in 2024. |
Decaffeinated sort of misses the whole point of getting a coffee jolt. It is on the same level as cigarettes without nicotine and alcohol free wine. The first decaf was Sanka, over a hundred years ago and still going strong. Robert Young was in Sanka commercials in late '70s early 80's (see one). |
And not be undone, there was Mrs Olson pushing Mountain Grown Folgers for over twenty years (see one). |
When I was growing up I liked the Hills Brothers Coffee's Arab ("The Taster") on the label, even if I didn't understand it.

Music: 1. "Black Coffee" by Humble Pie. 2. Coffee and TV by Blur. 3. Cigarettes and Coffee Blues by Lefty Frizzell. 4. Perculator a cheerful instrumental in 1961. |
Movies: A weird one: Coffee and Cigarettes. 2. "Out of Africa" (coffee plantation). 3+. Several documentaries. |
TV: 1. "Twin Peaks" FBI agent loved his coffee black and hot. 2. Central Perk with its giant cups features in "Friends". And along that line there is Monk's Cafè in "Seinfeld". |
Books: Almost everyone has or had a table in the livingroom upon which "Coffee Table" books were placed. The only book I can think of is Coffee, Tea or Me which I have never read. |
Back in Fiji in 1972 I showed Trish Murphy how to perk coffee which was a mysterious thing for the lady from New Zealand who had only ever had instant. |
Coffee bags, along the line of tea bags, idea ahead of its time? They just never caught on though they are readliy available in grocery stores. |
Ian loved the 2007 commercial ("Moconna Heft Meer Mmmmm") but probably never tried the stuff. |
Refills: Living in the States we were used to endless refills at no extra charge. I wonder if that is still the case at cafes and restaurants. When Doug visited us in Minnesota in 1980 he was amazed with it. |
In the summer of 1980 we were visiting Frank Thomas and he impressed upon me the importance of Iced Coffee; the only way he would drink it. I never cottoned on to it, but Gail will have one once in awhile. |
Sign of the Times: It has been a slowly developing situation. Beginning with coffee chains (Starbucks, Robert Harris and Coffee Club), then cafès and restuarants. And now it seems that every business has a banner outside tauting coffee in an effort to draw in. That includes petrol stations, corner dairies, mobile eateries and takeaways. |
People: 1. I worked with a Val Coffey. 2. I had a couple Dennis Coffey albums. |
Tom (USA): "Like Gail, I like espresso. We have a grinder and a Gaggia espresso machine. One cup every day. My beans come from NY city, a coffee shop in Greenwich Village. They are better than local and cheaper even with shipping. A neighbor has a Keurig machine which does make excellent coffee. We also have a drip machine. Not heated like Mr. Coffee but the container is a stainless steel thermos. It keeps coffee warm all day. " |
Its True: In Saudi Arabia, a woman can ask for a divorce on the basis that her husband didn't bring her coffee every single morning. |
Kjell (NZ): These days, I drink proper coffee only when we go out - flat white made with oat milk. Here at home, I have a daily Nescafe instant Hazelnut Latte. Can't imagine life without it. |
The most memorable coffee related time in my youth was in June 1967 when I would have been 20. I brought Steve's father, Gene, to pick up his car at a service station. He in turn took me out for a coffee at a small cafe on 66th. We had a decent conversation and he treated me as an equall or adult. |
