We had an adventurous boy named Wade (everyone called him Gizmo) Kobyashi who was the first to show us the ropes.
He taught us how to climb coconut trees, how to open coconuts and how to make things from fronds. Anything you needed,
just ask Gizmo - he'd get it or make it. He was a great help to me explaining the existing social structure of the place.
He advised me several times when he thought I was in trouble from getting too deep with some of the locals. Has a younger
brother, Owen. In 1989 he was working as a stock man in aa Hilo grocery store.
