enlarge Had dinner at Ernie's house; southern fried chicken.  Their six-yr old house is immaculate and modern filled with tradional Catholic statues and symbols.  Two television sets, stereo system, piano and wall-to-wall carpeting.  Looked through photo albums and it is obvious that Ookala has once been a thriving place.  In the fifties there were all sorts of special events for town gatherings and Scouts was very big.

His mother drove us to the dance in Papauilo.  I was surprized that I wasn't the only white person there.  I recognized around 15 people from Ookala.  The bands were loud and lousy, but everyone dug it.  I just sat back and absorbed it all as I couldn't figure out what/how they were dancing.  I could pick out the gangs.  There was no smoking or drinking allowed and the two policemen seemed enough to maintain the peace.  We got a lift back with two girls and I'd say it was worth going.
