The Play The highlight was the skit, a melodrama about the old west. It opened with Bob D. as the Old Ranger
(perfect with his Oklahoma accent). He set the scene - Smilin' Jack's, meanest place in Ookala. Walosi played a ukelele and fluttered in and out
singing choruses of "Pearly Shells". A great slapstick version of Gunsmoke with Jas playing Chester, Jack the bartender, Coyle and Gene were a couple of cowpokes
and Sweeney was Black Bart. They get into a card games that ends with Bart shooting the two cowboys. Big death scene as they ran around, bumping into each other eventually,
fall down and procede to kick away in their death throes. Enter Pearly Shells (Priscilla) the minister's daughter looking for a job.
Bart entices her up to his room against Jack's protests.
Next Scene: A couple of drunk Indians in the desert (Coyle and Gene again) and Bart abducts Pearly. Of course he kills the two Indians and we have another 10 minute death scene. Enter the hero, Matt Dillon (Ken Lee). He gets rid of Bart and is ready to claim his prize, Pearly. But alas she loves another - Walosi and they go off into the sunset singing "Pearly Shells". Susan Gutheil acted as the bump and grind girl carrying onto stage the posters that informed us what was going on. The biggest laugh from the PC people was when they called Jas, playing Chester, "Fuddy Duddy" - everyone went wild. It was a blast, the kids and folks loved it. And for weeks afterward, the kids were afraid of Sweeney. |
