Our "local boy" from Hilo. I think he was big on marine biology - only had one real chat with him.
However I was made very aware of his presence once my Christmas newsletter was sent out. Some people told me I had hurt his feelings.
Why? Because I had used the term "Japs" instead of saying Japanese. In 1997 when I befriended two Japanese girls I heard them
refer to "Jap", so I told them then I was told to not use that word because of WWII. They, of course, had no idea what WWII
was and told that all Japanese refer to themselves as "Japs" when using English.
He continued with PC training, going to Philippines and Samoa to do so. Retired as of 2007 and raises sturgeon. |
