QVS Students |
Anare Gukilau | ||
Another one of the rock solid, polite and quiet boys who became a friend. And like most I really knew so little about him back then.
So here is a sketchy summary of Anare at QVS. He was on the school National Quiz team in 1971 as Jesoni V remembers: "He answered a really difficult question in the national quiz… he was a member of the QVS team. "What's the name of large biting flies from Africa which live by feeding on the blood of vertebrate animals?" He answered: "Tsetse fly" much to everyone's amazement and to QVS' delight because I believe that clinched the competition for us"
He ran the lights for the school play in 1971. Bright boy who topped the SAT for Fiji in 1971. I got to know him better in New Zealand where he attended University of Auckland to become an architect. In 2014 he was in charge of a new bus station/market for Nausori ($11 million). In 2017 he was told he had diverticulitis. He came out to visit us a few times and I sold him my smaller stereo system. There was a lapse of 30 years between letters but we are back in touch now. He worked in the Housing Authority for several years, left and returned a few years later as chairman of the board of directors. And nowadays he is a consultant with a wife, daughter and two grandsons. He is a big time golfer. In 2008 he and other Fijians did golf tour of USA. His sister, Amelia, was a model for a Bill Bates sketch that I once had but since lost. | ||
