Dick Hargrove |
Dick arrived six weeks into the term. He was an American draft dodger who had fled to Australia leaving a wife behind.
He "married" a beautiful Aussie sheila, Liz, and they sailed to Fiji on his yacht. Holed up on Kandavu before making it to QVS with
a parrot, Kandi. Liz only lasted a couple months and then she left him. Had a son, from Kadavu days, Kalilevu. Very enterprising and always looking for a way to make a dollar.
Or more precisely, 15¢ per fish 'n chips (fish he had speared) to the students. He married Roko in 1973. They had a son, Jobe. In 1974 Dick and a couple others went out fishing/diving. Too successfully as the fish and four turtles caused the boat to capsize.
There was a search party (Ian and Roqica) who went out at 11PM. Next morning word was that they had made it ashore near Tova peak. The misadventure made it as a Reader's Digest® article.
They moved to California in 1977 where Dick taught and then to Saudia Arabia in the '80s where he taught English at a university. Back to Fiji where he ran an English Language/Diving School. A car accident in 1991 prevented him from ever diving again. In 1995 he was teaching at Lelean and trying to start a Day Care Center. More recently he ran a diving business for tourists and also had an English Language school for Asians. Divorced Roko and married a blonde with kids in tow. |
