I imagine this remarkable lady was loved by thousands of boys.
Not only did Mere oversee the cooks and meals, she also treated illness and wounds. Probably, also did a lot of mothering.
As I walked down to school in the morning I would pass the infirmary and there was always a long line of boys waiting, rain or shine,
to be treated. Nowadays I would cringe. But back then when I was she would stick a blunt, sort of sterile, needle filled with
penicillin in to my arm. She handed out sulfa tablets like aspirin. But what I liked best was she saved for bad tummy bugs - liquid opium. Since I was in charge of the Food
Store I interacted with her daily. But I never got to know her well, since most of the time she would simply giggle in reply. Mere died from
cancer on 13 November 1974 in the Suva hospital where she spent her last days. |
