Third Time Lucky? OLD FRIENDS - NEW CONNECTIONS
Just days after I wrote the last MalleyGram which Gail said was doing great she was back in the hospital. Doctor at clinic didn't like the fact that the leg wound was still infected after two months of antibiotics. So in she went on March 19th and they removed the metal and infected flesh.
Then it was a three week stay before they allowed her home. So five months after the accident she was restarting her recovery from scratch, which means back to the wheel chair with very little walking. And no teaching until August or September. She came home with a PICC line and had to inject an antibiotic 4 times a day. The good news is that in April they say the bones may finally be mending.

BULA
I have been blessed to have made contact with around 20 boys that I had taught at QVS way back in the early 70's. I find it amazing how many have gone us to success somewhere in the world from that small island nation of Fiji. We had the honor of a visit of former Head Boy, Apenisa Tolevu, with his Tongan wife, Toakase. It makes me so proud to have these good people consider me to be a friend, not just a teacher.
VILLAGE SMITHY
A fellow I have known for nigh on 50 years makes annual trips to OZ to purchase raw opal for his jewellery making (website). This year he made a detour and spent a few days with us. Steve and Gail had dated for a couple years before hooking up with me. So it is easy to say that he would be our best friend from US days.
The main attraction for Steve seemed to be our bathtub. He doesn’t have one and so ours was used frequently, even if it was a wee bit on the small side for his tall frame. I thought a trip to Wilderness Gems would be of interest. Only about quarter the amount of rocks and jewelry on display that we saw on our previous visits, and they were in plain language: crap. What a let down. Dirty and unkempt.
That disappointment didn’t matter as the important thing was being with him again after 24 years. So when we found our favorite souvenir store in Takanini closed, we just laughed. We also smiled while Steve searched the Karioitahi and Maraetai beaches for shells to bring back to his darling Darlene.
KIWIS
Gail organized a series of Sunday Kiwi visitors that included a couple who had done missionary work in Spain, a librarian married to an engineer who works around the world, a teacher married to a dairyman and another teacher married to the fellow who was first on the scene at Gail’s accident and stayed with her until ambulance arrived. And our friends, the Smithers came over with their Japanese home stay, Rino. The boys were the last ones in the pool for the summer.
When I had my annual flu shot I asked the nurse, who looked familiar, her name, and sure enough I had taught her, Adrienne, in 1976.
Ne’s Turn at our Favorite Place

Ne felt odd one morning, so I brought her to a doctor who sent us to Middlemore’s Emergency Dept. The doctor there was concerned that there might brain stem injury from Chiropractor’s neck manipulation. So they had her stay overnight but, luckily, an MRI in the morning showed nothing. And best guess is that she had a migraine aura. I recognized her doctor, Teddy Wu, as Gail had attended his wedding last year when he married our friend Joan’s daughter. I had seen the wedding photos; plus I had met him once last November at Joan’s house.
