It was a 5 month sojourn for David in our guest bedroom. But he is now living in the South Island.

He had an interview for a position here at The Mount and he had a second in Henderson (west Auckland). But third time lucky found him flying to Christchurch and interviewing at Kaiapoi.

The job is almost exactly as the one he had for the past 5 years in Minnesota. He is the travelling support person for a company that covers the three main towns north of CHCH.

He has the company van for his personal use after hours, just like at Marshall.

We would have liked him to be closer in the North Island, but it’s only a 2 hour flight which is much better than 24 hours to Minnesota.

 $2.21/litre

 $8.55/gal

We were able to celebrate David’s birthday with him for the first time in seven years. We spread it over a few days. Ate at Kwang Chow on the day and played Lord of the Rings. A couple days later had liquorice ice cream and a crunchy baba cake that Ne made.

For Ne’s big day we ate at Blue Restaurant and Bar, which is on the waterfront. Back at home we had a monster chocolate cheese cake. Played Alhambra.

Gail and I went to our OSV friend’s birthday meal. It was Anna's 90th. She is the Danish marvel who beats us at pétanque and Scrabble on a regular basis.

You have heard about Jesus turning water into wine. Well, another miracle happened at Anna’s big bash. At the drinks table I was going for a red, when June pointed out the Stables 2012 Gewurztraminer she and Gail were having. Asked her if it was sweet (as that is the current style which I don't like). She said no, its spicy. One sniff and I said it was beer, shook the bottle and foam appeared. So down the drain and tried another bottle which was wine. Neither Gail nor June could tell that it wasn’t wine!!!! I told Anna about it and she said it was she who put three left over beers from the previous day’s party into the bottle, thinking to use it in cooking.

I sat with Anna’s youngest daughter, Pia. She was born and raised in England but has been in Denmark for the past 30 years. Just another member of Anna’s remarkable family. Also at the table was Else, who lives next door to Anna, Peter (and wife Alison) who has known Else for about 40 years, Connie and Pam.

Our most recent birthday celebration was for Colleen Atmore who is a friend from Fiji days. We went to Bluebiyou for a meal. Great food but poor service.

It took two years but we finally went to a Thursday evening gathering at Papamoa. Sort of like our old Friday night Trivial Pursuit. These guys (and a few gals) show up with large cartons filled with games. They each hawk a game trying to get players. Usually can play at least two or maybe three new games each week. A lot to remember and may never play that same game again, unless we decide to buy it. The host just happens to sell them via his SB website, eh?

Americans call it “Danish”.
Danes call it “Wienerbrød”.
The French call it Viennoiseries.
Austrians invented it using Hungarian flour.
