| Last minute painting of flats then everything into the truck and we set it up on the stage at RKS. Back in the evening to put the play (Inspector General) on. Dismantled and put everything onto the truck.
| Met Alfred Heimgartner, from Switzerland - new director of the YMCA. Since he was tall I asked him if he wanted to play on our team. He showed that one of his hands had no finger tips. | ![]() |
| Doug brought us to their new rental at Ardmore. Had a walk around the grounds - right on airstrip. Sanders joined us (photo) for a little Bakana. | ![]() |
| BB practice. Spent an hour trying to make 25 layups in a row. Te fell asleep at 8PM while playing in my room with the pens and pencils in the holder [ed. - got it in 1964 and still have and use it 2022 and the scissors in the photo are just as old, if not older]. Fireworks display at Massey Park that shook the house. | ![]() |
| Dad and Lavonne came at 6:30PM. He brought along a listing book and we discussed all the ways of financing a house.

Th - Sat in on Ian's 6th form computer class, using LOGO to draw stars. Got a photo of the lali girl in action and the tuck shop. Ian took the afternoon off and brought us to Pacific Harbour which is about an hour west of Suva. But this was a typical White trip. We had to repair his muffler, which we did outside the shop where he bought the materials, there on the main highway between Suva and Nausori. So by the time we got there it was too late to have a tour, or to go on the boat ride or see the meke show in progress - but we snuck a peek over the fence. So we wandered around where we could on our own. Gail bought a tray with plaited sides [ed. - still using it in 2022]. On the way home we stopped at Suva market for fish, but none to be had so we had boiled corn (in the leaves). Wan-Q where we had supper. Macu was in sad shape until he got his food. Ne couldn't get scrambled eggs. I had prawn curry for old times sake. Home where I took the slide projector apart and found the lens with a fine white gel growth that I scraped off so we could look at our Fiji slides. | ![]() comps'r us ![]() "Get Up" ![]() get down ![]() tray |
| F - Aldies to watch home movies: our Taupo, their Taupo; their Hawaii, our Hawaii; our kids in the sprinkler, their kids in the sprinkler. Highlight was Sugar playing the piano. | ![]() |
| Sa - Brought David to work. At the gate were two cars and a lot of discussion with the guard. So I stopped a ways back so they could reverse and get out the side road. Well, they backed straight into me. Big shock to the driver and only small damage to my car. Breezes over for a meal and slides of Papua-New Guinea. Had a good time thanks to an excellent '81 Nobilo Pinotage.
| High = 23°C so we shot out to Awhitu and paddled the canoe in the Kauritutahi Creek. Ne and I went downstream until we hit bottom (couple hours after high tide). Gail and David brought it back upstream (video).
| Gail very busy - to airport to get tickets, school to organize reliever and to Aldies. Sanders stopped in with soup and cookies. Brought Gail to airport at 10PM.
| Awhitu: Walked along beach to parking lot and then had lunch there. Boys found cow skulls. Returned along the lookout way. Doug W and Angela brought Jackie at 4PM, from Ponky's birthday party. After supper we played Scrabble with Ian, Gail and Trish. Bingo with everyone (video). | ![]() ![]() |
| F - Ve put on Doug's wetsuit and took a kayak out to the ocean (video). When she returned Yuki tried it, took a while to figure it out but she enjoyed herself doing the creek within Nick's property (video). Did the pa hill. Yuki not really dressed for cutting a swathe through the bush. At the top I made each girl yell out "Hello". Very difficult for all of them (video). Roasted marshmellows (video) and the smoke gave me a migraine so I was in bed for a few hours. After supper it was UNO, Pigout, Chinese Checkers and Upwords. | ![]() ![]() |
| Gail forced me up at 11AM so we could go to Water Gardens in Ngtea with Ian and Susi - not really water gardens but still a beautiful place with cute/humorous touches everywhere. Ian took a circuitous route getting there going via Meremere power station back roads, coming out at the Pink Pig on highway 2. We stopped at the Rock Shop and sat through a display of phorescent rocks under UV light. Pack 'n Save in Pukekohe, where we met Mario stacking kumara and I removed a bunch of silverbeet from Susi's trolley.
| Gail and I walked around Whiskey Row then checked out the wonderful library. Got the mail and Dan followed me up there in his car so he could give me a flier on a "revival" being held. Stopped in to see Purnie and met her wee Yorkie, Bonnie (what a little live wire).
| Left Mangakino around 10:30AM and went via Tokaroa to Tirau getting there at Noon. Since it is Anzac Day shops didn't open until 1PM. But Garden Center was (traditional for nurseries to flaunt the law and only a couple get fined) and we wandered about it. I got a Cyperus Alternifolius to use as a backdrop for my pool waterfall. Put in back of van and on the rest of the drive people reacted to it, probably because it kind of looks like marijuana. Ne bought a 1947 Sunbeam mixer that she sized up last time we were there. At The Big Sheep Wool Gallery I got a baby's woolskin rug and had it shipped off to my nephew Christian. Stopped in Cambridge to wander around, but most shops were closed so just grabbed something to eat and made our way back to Waiuku, getting there at 5PM. Told that meal ready at Steve's so we quickly unpacked a little, cleaned up and went over at 5:45PM only to find Susi and Ian had left, so we waited for their return and gave up on Kaitanis arriving. Tracy and Scott came when we were on the ice cream and K's arrived at 7:15PM with a massive perfume overload so we left. Ian brought us to Mike's for TP. | ![]() Red Shed ![]() Murray ![]() baaaa |
| Kathy visited. Mike in hospital after a fall and internal bleeding. She went to 'open house' to see what their Argyle place looked like actually finished. Gail and I went to have lunch with Trish. She is having laser surgery for glaucoma tomorrow. Wandered Botanical Gardens in the rain - very different from last time I was there. Ian visited - he has a cataract started.
| Trish's for lunch and looked over family photos to be used for her father's 80th. We got home just before Brundell arrived, and a little later, Ian. After a meal with a Longridge 2005 rosé we looked at Dave's trip photos fueled on by a Nobilo mighty '01 Cab Shiraz and a fantastic Wolf Blass '03 Shriaz.
| Made a 1974 Top Ten. Whites over for a meal and greet David. Not me. Too much perfume so I stayed in my bed and slept for 4 hours. Called Mike H, who is now home permanently from brain rehab. email from Vitu who now has a job in States. | ![]() Karioitahi |
| Middlemore to pick up Ne who's MRI showed everything was fine in her head. Last night they brought her at 11PM to have a CT scan only to figure out that she didn't need it since she was having an MRI in the morning.
| M - Angi and Carl called. David sorted through all of his stuff. After supper we played Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs and Dominion. | ![]() |
| Sa - Day 31 of Lockdown. Village has been giving us candy, bananas and puzzles and today we were gifted Anzac cookies.
| Su - Gail and I went to the Tauranga Society of Artists - exhibit at Tauranga Boys College. In general not very inspiring, but about 50% sold at high prices. | ![]() |
| Th - Left at 11AM. We got to the parking lot at 1:30PM. I was chatting with the attendant - when I tried to impress him by saying that I came from the Mount, he pointed to a car and said that guy drove up from Wellington. Being Anzac Day we saw the second half of the Police 42 - NZDF 8 (women) game. Then Lt Mark Hadlow (Navy) MC'd the ANZAC pregame activities. Army band played and sang, troops trooped and a helicopter delivered the game ball (clip.). The Warriors managed to lose to last place winless Titans 27 - 24. Another game that the should have won. Then to add insult to injury we took 55 minutes to get out of the parking lot. Just like all of his cars, Russell has no idea how to use the ventilation and his windscreen fogged up so much we couldn't see ahead... Made it to his place and it was an easy drive home.
