We drew pictures to send into "Romper Room". We made a house in the basement using sheets. I was the father and when I went "to work" I would fool around with my chemistry set.
Watched Rose Parade. Basketball and Parcheesi with Billy. Watched the Rose Bowl: Washington 17 - Gophers 7.
Private phone line installed. Sawed skeets for basement (putting up ceiling tiles). Called Linnea (got Campion's phone number from her).
Rick
Melanie H's with Steve N, Kincy and Angi to play cards.
Cards at Les' with Dunker Dan (on leave from army). Dan and I continued our 500 mastery over Les and Judy.
Hawaii: Details in Peace Corps Journal.
Got photos of Lenati and boys shooting off their bamboo canons. Then I helped the new bursar, Daya Ram, move in some of his stuff. Spent the evening helping White mark English exams.
Jo's first day as Principal. Gail and I worked in the library. Gail walked to Natovi Mission to get our marriage papers. Took photos of Geoff and Bob playing tennis. Hargrove visited - his US passport has been taken so he is stuck in Fiji. Penny came over to say goodbye.
Can't buy Coke® anywhere - the factory closes down for the holidays [ed - not just that factory, everything shuts down so there are shortages of toilet paper, sugar etc... and we didn't know so we hadn't stocked up]. Shellfish pancakes were super gritty. Lost snooker but skunked Gail. Sketched a witch and went for a run.
Th - Town with Ian only to find the stores closed. Billiards and snooker until midnight.
Lusi showed up with Joanne McD and her Fijian boyfriend, Jo, just as we were ready to go to Suva, so they hitched a ride. We dropped Susi and Dougie off at the village (Burelevu). About 8 miles past Korvou Ian decided he couldn't make Nausori without oil. So he backtracked to Korovou to put in 3 quarts. While there I spotted Pua's new bread truck. Once over the Nausori bridge we had a flat tire and much trouble trying to jack up the rust heap. Then the spare's wheel holes were too large, so we backtracked slowly to Nausori to get tire repaired. At this point Jo and her friend decided to walk the rest of the way to Suva. Parked the car at petrol station by the bridge and went to a store to buy washers. Meanwhile they moved the car and left it in gear, so when we got back Ian jacked up the car and it rolled away. Got the washers on and drove to service station by the Regal Theater and waited while the flat was repaired and we could get the spare off. Finally got to Suva at 3:45PM and probably set a new record for longest time to make the 30 miles journey. No ship in, so no curios at the Market. Found Ian and we went to the Sunset Apartments but nothing available for the 6th. Checked out Dominion Lodge. Over to McKeating's where Ian phoned around. Meanwhile, we went over to visit the Hunts. Des was at bowls, again. Played ABC word game on way home. Scallops and pizza while looking at slides.
M - Up at 7AM with Ne. Each morning she brings me my glasses and slippers to help me get out of the bed faster, and get her breakfast. Had a barbecue for supper. Sanders came for a visit and met mom.
Lamorna stopped in to say "goodbye" on her way to Wellington. Barbecue and some wicked paddle ball at Sanders.
F - Got a book about trees and bought a cactus for Joyce's birthday and David said: "So she will remember Dick after he is dead". David painted his Spiderman and Ne did her Flinstones picture. After a supper they went to Lundholms. I put Mr Yuk stickers onto things around the house.
W - High of -13°F - drove to work to avoid waiting for busses. Chuck called a status meeting for Phase 1. I fell out of my chair when he said it was due on the 7th. I haven't begun the CList. Saw Dr Foreman, neurologist, in afternoon. He listened, looked me over, said no nerve problem, but he would give me migraine meds. He gave me one: EEG - 20 electrodes glued to my head. Strobe lights for 45 minutes.
Th - Trish called to say that a good looking woman came to get Doug because her daughter had a "toothache".
Karioitahi: Gail and I stayed in for about 30 minutes. Just as we were planning to scale the sand dunes Aldersons showed up so we moved our car over to theirs on the beach. I was all worn out so after a meal I had a nap while kids built in the sand with Doug and James. While the kids and I climbed Doug windsurfed.
Kathy and Mike dropped in with sweets and wine for a cuppa. Drove to Whites' new place at 12 Tawa . Peach and plum trees. Brought a bottle of cab-sav that Mike S had bottled (gave me a migraine). But nothing compared to the Lemon and Grapefruit fortified wine that Ian paid $8 for a flagon. Spent evening playing bridge. Ian and I won the first rubber in two hands. I bid two game hands and went down twice for 1200 points. A few hours later we were way ahead.
Up early to get good sailing back to Maraetai. Got there at 9:30AM. Big waves at marina so we had to anchor out and Simon had to row back and forth 3 times. see more photos Just as we got to the house Murph and Sheryl were heading out. I brought Simon back in the van and it was a couple hours loading the van and securing the boat. We all piled into the van, stopped at Mill lookout, then Waiuku to follow Whites to Karioitahi for a supper on the beach followed by surfing. Susi even went in. White's for slides of our trips to ChCh and Fiji.
Karioitahi for the first time this summer. Whites joined us - waves weren't good and new body board too flimsy. Three hours in the sun. David and Matthew tried standing on their boards in the shallow water. Brought Matthew and Jackie back to stay with us for a few days.
Wholesale Tree Company - pohutukawa, bottlebrush, passionfruit, tangelo, veggies, hollyhock and foxglove. Veggie stand and bought a large, fresh garlic. I bit a clove and burnt my mouth, ears and stomache. So bad that I couldn't drive and Gail had to take over.
Smithers came by with Sally for croquette and a meal (grassy Hardy's '91 Chablis).
Karioitahi picking up Matthew and Jackie. Cloudy, windy but the waves were perfect. Great rides. Gail stayed in for 45 minutes. Whites for lunch. Played Upwords with Granny. Kaitanis came over for supper. Three games of bridge.
Maraetai, stopping at the Woolshed. David on raft, Gail and I in tubes but the others were content to stay on beach [ed. - probably not up to their 5 star resort white sand beaches with warmer water]. Showed the girls my Goofy collection, greeting cards and sketches. Whites. Claire was there with a parrot, Sam. Karioitahi. Low tide so we didn't go in. Walked to the waterfall. Had Chinese takeaways, yaqona, slides, a French SCED Lady Rosé.
T - Doug over to play "One Hit Wonders". He gave me $65 to pay for the spare stylus that I had bought. I gave him the Rock Encyclopedia that Ian gave me.
Sa - Doug and David came by for a swim. Clark called wanting to know the name of a TV series about a airboat in Everglades. Duh? Everglades. Kathy S called.
Brought Ne to Manukau so she could go to Auckland with Nao. Hardwarehouse and spent a long time filling my trolley with pool chemicals and electrical items only to find that my VISA card had expired. Phone couldn't do a toll call, so I drove to Westfield and called Gail who was able to give me the numbers on my other VISA card. Brundell stopped in with work for Ne and I sent him home with one of my wong bok cabbages.
Hoffsis called to wish me a "Happy", check on the card count and get some computer advice. Ian over for a swim, coffee and a game of Upwords with Ne, Gail and lucky winner, me. Lovely rosemary chicken fettuccini that Ne made for Ian and us. Ian, Jackie, David and I played Monopoly® cards.
Susi and K
Whites over for German Grand Prix that Gail won. First race with individual dice. Ian and I had a game of snooker, watched Law and Order and had a midnight dip with David.
Pukekohe where I picked up my camera (they claim it worked perfectly - so no repair done). Waited 25 minutes at Harvey Norman before Carolyn asked if I was being helped. Then she wandered off for 10 minutes while processing the computer I bought for Renee. New store, so the chemical smell from carpet and paint killed me.
Su - Called Dad and heard about his walking limitations and plans to get rid of his car. His cousin Edmund Kodet wants to buy the Malecek store in Bechyn and turn it into a B&B. Joined Kathy and Mike at Jones' for a lunch and tour of house (every room the same color) with its huge mural and then the Hunua property itself which includes 5 acres of bush onto Redhill. Wandered over to neighbor, Terry Scott, to look at his wood turning works. Mike told a great "blonde" joke about an airplane fight.

Th - Photos from Celia - New Years Day. Games at Kim's (his daughter was there) with Martin, Nathan, Sean and Max. Played Hare & Tortoise, Caylus, Fiji and Koryo (I won). Kim had a a game called Artus, which is his surname.
F - Watched the Twins Red Sox game of Sept 30, 1967 game via Youtube. Back then it was stirup socks, no batting gloves, pitchers batted, no pitch count, no fancy shoes and most of the players were skinny twerps (no steroids or weight programs to bulk up).
Su - Clayton over in the afternoon for a demolition derby (no pit stops) that wasn't bad as we had hoped with only two cars out after 6 laps. After lasagne we played Survive a couple times. Chocolate ice cream and we taught him Stone Age. Finished off with a couple games Eight Minute Empire: Legends. ecards from Brenda and Signe.
Th - Sky hazed over from Australian bush fires. There is a driveway that has 26 pigeons on it and a cat that that just lies there with them.
Su - 100 minute walk along Glouster to Pacific View and came across Coast Reserve which had a wading pool - 26 cans. Newsletter from Gawel, suffering in Guam.
