Luau We got up at 3AM to build the fire in a hole. A few stayed up to stoke it. By 8AM the rocks were red hot. The pigs are put onto chicken fencing and the hot rocks are put inside the pigs. Then they are wrapped into the wire and placed into the hole onto of the
remaining rocks. Yams are put on top and the hole is covered with ti leaves, then damp gunny sacks and finally dirt to prevent flaming. Ever so often the thing is dampened with water. Almost everyone was taking photos and I used my movie camera for the first time.

For language class we had handcrafts and blackout. Our group with Ramon made brooms out of coconut leaves. The Fijian students weaved baskets from the leaves. (movie) We took the pigs out at 4PM and went to the gym in shifts where we ate the local dishes. I ate with Joyce. Mr Kobyashi made a welcoming speech and Michelle made an emotional "thank you" reply. The Fijians sang, then we had Hindi songs and the PCV girls did a hula. That was followed with open slather dancing with music played by Ernest and his band. So I was now relegated to the bleachers though a lot of women tried to get me on the floor. I told Diane that I was waiting for Bette, so when she came Diane told her. And that is how I ended up dancing. Hated every step even though I loved Bette. [ed. - Bette was a spunky 54 at the time]. I left early with Herb. |
