Asaichi and Cherio (mayor of Ookala) took Blado and me to Hawi'i Volcanoes National Park.
We stopped at visitor center and watched a movie on past eruptions (in Japanese as that was the majority of the audience).
We were able to see two smoking craters up close [ed. - much closer than people were allowed in 1997]. We walked through a 300 yard tube that had been
a delivery for magma. At one point we were detained and rerouted because of a break in the road where steam was issuing. In fact it seemed
as though steam was shooting up everywhere. So glad to get to Hilo where we stopped to watch tourists running to get onto a cruise ship.
Then we drove around the yedo gardens on the coast.
Quite some day, but not quite done yet. David and I picked up Michelle and went to Rachel's for supper and watched "Gilligan's Island".
Gale and Emosi showed up and poor Emosi could hardly stay awake but he was really game. The three of us went to Walter's where we talked about
Charlie's fishing exploits and played cards. |
