It was a drizzly morning. All the cooks were out in force having us line up for photos before we got onto the bus
that brought us to the Hilo airport. Just to show you how well organized the Peace Corps was: I am waiting in the Hilo airport
and Chuck Irby comes up to me and asks if I would like to teach at the University of South Pacific. Either a great honor or maybe they thought
my Hindi wasn't good enough. We talked about it for awhile and I told him that I wasn't old enough for it.
We flew into Honolulu. I took a cab to my hotel with some other guys. There I shared a room with Terry Ford and
David Blado. Did I enjoy Honolulu? Think back - the night before I had gone 33 miles in the back of a pickup.
Then less than 5 hours sleep - up early to pack and on bus at 8AM. I had a bad head cold, so I went straight to bed when I
got to the room. I made good use of the HOT shower. The view from our 3rd floor window offered more hotels in every direction. |
