40 BLISSFUL YEARS,
YEAH, RIGHT
DAVID DOWN UNDER IN DECEMBER

The White clan flew in for the big bash as we celebrated Ian and Susi’s anniversary at the Grapevine café in Pukekohe. 40 years ago who would have thought that they’d end up in Waiuku, New Zealand and just 1 mile away from the Malleys?
Eldest son, Steven, told how great the parents are. Ian gave a speech saying how great the kids are. So it was up to me to tell the truth in a short humorous speech.
I also had whipped up a bunch of questions about the couple for the guests to answer.

David needed a break from his very long work hours. So he came to New Zealand to see the family, have a rest, watch cricket while his main task was to go through his belongings that we have in storage. He brought two suitcases of the stuff back to Minnesota. He’ll need to come again as he didn’t manage to go through everything. Since he is afraid of heights we brought him to the Manukau Heads restored lighthouse and to the observation deck of the Sky Tower. Ne and I had a good time taking in the views and we almost got Gail to look straight down.
David loves trains and so I always try to get a ride in on our trips with him. This time we went to the Driving Creek one at the top of the Coromandel Peninsula. We zig-zagged up to a lookout on a small bush train. (photos)
From there we did a small, warm up hike to a trig. Gail made it!! Left her at the trig and the men did a trail for a further 40 minutes.

Next day we went into Kauaeranga Valley where David wanted to do the Billy Goat climb again. Took us 5 hours and with bush growth over the past 20 years we only had a small glimpse of the waterfalls. Had a soak in Opal natural hot pools near Matamata to ease our aching muscles (Gail had walked a couple easier trails while were on our trek).

63, that’s easy to remember

David flew in the day before my birthday. Our septic tank was emptied to begin celebrations. Clarks and Ian dropped in for the evening. The family went to eat at the Sky Tower’s revolving restaurant. Ann E gave me a Goofy Bobblehead. Trish gave me a Goofy tee shirt.

“Have It Your Way”

Burger King’s catch phrase from the 70’s to be a point of difference from McDonalds. The slogan was revived in 2004. But almost every special and some of the regular menu items have the proviso: “No variations to…”
