TIMELY TUNES | |
Continuing what I began in “S” here are more special songs. Interestingly, most seem to be tied in with a girl and being in a car. In 1997 Gail and I listened to the New Zealand hit “How Bizarre” as we drove across the States. Going back to 1961 I had spent the day in Rochester with my freshman class watching movies, playing baseball, bowling. We hit Minneapolis after dark around 10PM. Schindler and I convinced Brother to let us off near the airport. Otherwise it would have meant driving a further 30 minutes downtown and then catching a public bus back. Well, as we worked our way through open fields and over fences Del Shannon’s “Runaway” played on Mike’s transistor radio and each time I hear it I think of that mini adventure. In the summer of 1964 I went to the State Fair with Kincy, Terri and Debbie J. And as we drove there The Honeycombs’ “Have I the Right?” played. A feel good tune for a feel good day. Doug Alderson told the story of how the first time we met in 1973 I was playing Bachman-Turner’s “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” really loud. He knew then that we would be good friends. R.I.P. Doug. Mike Clark reminds me once in a while of how we were together and heard The Knack’s “My Sharona” for the first time and I predicted it would be number one. Not only that but it was the number one tune for 1979. At the pump: |

TRIVIAL PURSUIT - In my earliest diary going back to 1959 you will read that I was compiling lists of many mundane topics. I was into “trivia” before the word became common. I began buying trivia books in the 70’s. When Trivial Pursuit came out in 1981 I bought it straight away. We tried it with our friends but not much interest. So when at a Christmas party in 1992 I heard the group talk about seeing each other at their next trivia evening I was in heaven. That group of 12-15 met every Friday for the next 19 years. We are now too far away to continue so each Friday night I test myself in one of my many trivia books. (my TP website)
TEACHING - I taught maths, physics, science, radio, pop music and art over a period of 11 years in three countries. Then 5 years teaching computing at adult evening classes. I married a teacher. Our two kids each taught computer classes. Quite a few of our New Zealand friends are/were teachers. My favorite teacher was Miss Miller who encouraged me to excel when I was ten.
TRISH - One of our first Kiwi friends, she and Gail were at the same school in 1973. The woman loves people, dogs and TALKING. I once told her that each person is allocated so many words at birth and that she was talking herself to an early grave. Her husband, Doug, was my best Kiwi friend. They were the only ones to visit us when we lived in Minnesota in the 80’s. Life has been tough on Trish losing Doug and her elder son way too soon. My father once told me that I had too many friends. Sometimes I think that may be true for Trish as she rushes about helping so many people. Our birthdays are two days apart so we have had a tradition of BDay photos together, even if we celebrate them a couple months late, eh?

TOYS - The earliest toy I can remember was a Christmas gift. It was a tin space rifle that shot out sparks when you pulled the trigger. A special toy that I played with forever as a boy was a Prince Valiant castle set. As an adult I probably prefer gizmos over traditional toys. My Goofy collection has a container full of toys. We had a toy poodle, Chardonnay.

From 1964-7 I used a TELETEXT machine that connected to all Holiday Inns. I would type my message on my machine and it would print it out on a ticker tape at the other end. Since it cost money we used a lot of hotel business abbreviations. So I reckon that I was TXTing 30 years before mobile phones made it popular. I have yet to own a mobile phone, so I am not conversant with the modern lingo, lol. | Malley Muses TIME
Did anyone else notice that somewhere in the past twenty years DJs stopped telling the time? When I was growing up it would be mentioned several times an hour and even more often during morning and evening rush hours. But no more. I wonder if there is a psychological reason for its cessation. Maybe I notice it when others don’t because I haven’t worn a watch since 1990. |
