1970 | Week of rising at 5:30AM and being MOD wore me out so now I have a cold - so bad that I didn't go to school this week. Sigston told me when I tried to do so: "No one is indespensible - go home and get in bed".
1980 | Su - Town's and over to a pancake breakfast at James Ballentine VFW with Dick and Joyce. Fundraiser by Lions for Crippled Children Fund.
1985 | Sa - Train - Went through the Spokane newspaper. Followed the Snake River before turning south for Portland, OR. Loved the scenery for the last stretch. Apple and cherry trees in bloom. Once in Portland we tried to get hold of Grey Line for a tour. Told we could get a free bus into downtown. Tried The Benson where they said to try The Imperial which is the headquarters for Grey Line. They said tours for 1985 hadn't started and were told to take a bus to Zoo which was having a special day. Missed bus by 10 seconds or so, so we wandered about a closed (Saturday) downtown until the 10:18AM came. Many different attractions in Washington Park. Zoo was crawling with people. Two Kodiak bears played with a bone in the water while a brown bear zipped round and round. Sloth bear was different with the long black hair. Good monkey display. Tried elephant ears. While waiting for the bus the kids were entertained by a guy with a talking tennis ball. Bussed into town and walked to Union Station. Boarded train and this time there were others in compartments of our car. | Asian Panda St John Bridge |
1986 | Checked out of Tauranga-Taupo Lodge (receipt) at 9AM and went to Turangi but the Forestry Info Center was closed and there was rain coming so we cancelled our trip to Rotopounamu Lake and Kaimanawa forest. Stopped at Hinemaiaia Stream to go fishing. Tramped up the wrong side through the trees, back to road, over the bridge and up the trail on the other side where we found blackberries galore. Found a rocky island for the kids to cast from. Later on moved down to another spot, but no luck for us or any of the other fishers.
1992 | Waiting at lights I heard a woman say "Tobler" and "Rosehill", so I enquired. Turned out to be Julie Davies whom I had taught when she was a 6th former in 1973. She didn't recognize me because I hadn't changed and still looked the same, when I should have aged. Chatted there: she is now in Brisbane and sees Bruce once in a while. Told me how he showed her how to sex mice. Also said she felt sorry for me for the way her classmates treated me. But she also said that I inspired her to go to university.
1997 | Picked up Veronica, Yukiko, Chihiro and Jackie and went surfing at Karioiatahi. Ve tried to stand on Matt's board. Over to Whites to play Chinese Checkers and pitanque and have a meal. Had baba cake and the girls had a laugh - "bab" means "old lady" in Japanese.
1998 | M - Karioitahi Beach with Peter, Ian and Jackie. Ran into Clarks with their 2 dogs and 2 ponies. We all went in for a surf, but we missed high tide. Played petanque on the beach (video). Whites' for Chinese Checkers. Video of Peter making us Caiprihnas. He also serve up candied bananas and other Brasilian treats. |

2002 | In to see Joyce and help her with a meatloaf lunch. She is better (yesterday was "crappy", today she's "shitty") and able to talk for longer periods, so we went through her mail and she began giving orders of things to do.... Instead, though, I went to Walmart to get a cordless phone and an AOL CD so I could complete my connection to the Internet. Called her lawyer to arrange the signing of her will. Called home to advise them and double check on what Gail is doing. Hospital in the evening for a few hours.
2005 | Harris saw major infection in my left ear and gave me a script for anti-biotic. He said that pain in my right eye was due to pterygium growing and hardening.
2015 | M - Willie and Sue taught us Bolivia over a bottle of Jacobs Creek 2012 Pinot Noir.
2017 | Th - Cyclone Cook passed over Tauranga, the worst being nearer to Whakatane and the East Coast.
2020 | M - Day 19 of lockdown. Heavy rain last night and today strong winds, so it was just a short time outside.
2022 | W - email from Newsy (forced to leave ND early to avoid snow storm), email from Smithers (working full time due to Covid causing lack of teachers), email from Hansen (stuck on freeway on way back to MN) and email from Hoffsis (shared the "twins" photo with Terry).
2023 | Th - Listened to the Twins beat White Sox in 10 on a throwing error. New Acer came and I spent the afternoon setting it up. Brought it over to 34OC and set up the power inline pieces...internet still too slow. AFL: Big upset when lowly Suns beat reigning champs, Cats, 73 - 49 (Lukosius had 5 goals).
2024 | Sa - Left at 11:45AM. Russell and I got to the stadium in time to get a parking spot across the road. And we got to watch NSW team lose 18 - 24 to Manly. I bought us fritz's wieners. Big boys made many errors and Shaun missed a few easy kicks that would have won the game. We got a penalty kick after time ran out and that tied the game. So it went to two overtimes before ending in a draw (highlights).
