1975 | Walked along Kelly's Beach from where we saw the ferry leaving for Russell. Drove to the Treaty House and Whare Runanga at Waitangi and went into both. Kerikeri where we went into the first stone store in NZ and went through Rewa's village [ed. replica of a pre-European Maori village] (boat house). Had fish and chips. Visited Sanders' friends, Kathy and Trevor and their 25 acre citrus orchard. Trev is building his own 3400 sqft house with high ceilings. Back to Papakura. (Trip Photos) | Poupou |
1976 | Breezes brought us into Auckland where we caught the bus to the zoo. Couple hours there - David liked the polar bears the best. Had a lunch by the lake. Bussed back to Papakura where we bought ice cream cones at Easy Spot.
1978 | Gail went to squash with Trish. While they were gone I had heard noise and went out back door to check - saw nothing. Gail walked Trish home and when she returned she scared off a burglar who was at our car in the driveway. Beethoven chased him out of the back yard.
1985 | Sa - After breakfast we wandered around the yard and took photos. Had "pumpkin cheries" which were tangerine flavor. Said our 'goodbyes' to Fujiokas. Stopped at Nakamara store and bought guava juice, orange/passionfruit pop and mango seeds (flavored with licorice but tasted like old car seat leather). Wapio Valley and walked down (almost to the bottom) and struggled to get back up again. Drove to Waimea and shopped. Long drive across desert to the Kona coast. Stopped at White Sands Beach and did some body surfing. Stopped at Ho'okena Beach Park to look at the waves crashing in. Drove through Volcano Park without stopping, getting into Hilo at dark. Got a room at Hilo Hukilau - an old place in sad shape but cheap ($36) and full of character so unlike the modern cells of new hotels. | sugar cane Fujiokas coconuts more photos |
2007 | Gail had a massage at Skin4Life - birthday gift. Ann and Russell came with Christopher and Mike for a farewell meal (Chinese takeaway) to David, with a very dry and fruity Old Coach Road '04 Merlot. Ian came with his frying pan that he has been trying to get delivered since Nov 26th. We played the US Genus version TP and it was almost a slaughter.
2011 | W - David arrived with Hummels, pills, candy (Cinnamon Bears) and a farmer's cap with "Czech" on it.
2016 | W - Ian arrived around 1:30PM. He and I went to kayak the Kainui River. Interesting seeing all the new highway configurations on the way there. Spent 40 minutes paddling up stream as far as the Link bridge and then floated back in about 10 minutes. Couldn't turn right to get back so we went through Te Puke to get onto the Link ($2 toll). Also explored the new Sandhurst development and highway connections. Had a lamb meal with an excellent Vidal 2013 Merlot CabSav. Then it was Istanbul, Lewis & Clark and Alien Frontiers until 1:30AM. |

2018 | F - Went to the stadium. Missed opener. No Peter and some confusion when all these strangers turned up. One was his grandaughter. Warriors lost Kohu Harris to concussion and Green was sent off for 10 minutes. Played without Shaun Johnson and Kata and yet they beat the undefeated Dragons 20 - 12 (highlights). Both teams now in first place.
2019 | Sa - Easter weekend - saw four cop cars before turning off to Tahuna. Giving it a try and drove across to State highway 1. Rolling, winding hills. I bought kebabs for us. Lackluster game - both teams playing poorly. But Warriors fumbles lost them the game.
2021 | T - Ann brought Gail to the hospice shop. Spent the afternoon talking. Taught Ann "Wingspan".
2022 | W - Colleen W and her friend Angela, from Omokaroa, came at 1PM. We taught them Wingspan.
2023 | Th - Saw nurse and my diabetes reading is excellent at 4.9. Had a pumped up flu shot for $38. AFL: Dogs with a big upset win over Tigers that went to the wire 89 - 84.
