1969 Hawaii: Details in Peace Corps Journal.
1970 Jone T and I walked to the beach and went over to Qoma in a punt with 20 others. First impression was solitude. People everywhere but it was like they didn't exist. Village much larger than I expected. We sat down and had a bilo before attending Lusi's wedding. She, Jone V, bridesmaid and best man were in traditional tapa dress (photo). Women had sandalwood chips in their hair. They walked through the village with a group of singers behind them. Stopped at church outside setting with pews for we white people. Talatala started it off with a reading, song and prayer. Then he addressed himself to the couple and they exchanged vows. Ring followed by communion. A teacher speaking for the koro-ni-vuli gave a speech, followed by the groom's father. After signing certificates three times a copy was given to Jone and they were officially married. Whole thing was so solemn. Everyone was asked to make a contribution and congratulate the couple. Moved into the church (only permanent building on the island) for the magiti. I had a young maiden fanning me - fantastic, eh? Singers kept up the entertainment down through to the wedding cake. All in all the couple seemed to be ignored, no one showed any emotions. I imagine since it is a religious setting. After the meal we walked around. Lusi changed into regular clothes but Jone disappeared. Lusi's father presented tabua, yaqona and a butchered cow to Jone's father. Woman carried many mats of all sizes and designs and laid them in a bure (the honeymoon suite). What amazed me was that no one, including Lusi, seemed interested in what was going on.

1977 Th - Got to the airport at 8:30AM and waited an hour for mom to emerge. She was the last one out as Ag people had to remove a gunny sack that was around a Coleman stove she brought for us. Played Po-Ke-No on the lawn. Sent a cable letter to Jim F saying all's well.
1979 Sa - Gail's boss at KFC, Owen Rogers, bought our vacuum cleaner. Played Bingo after supper. Mike borrowed our Coleman stove as they are off to Cormandel.
1981 T - It was -6°F and Strom's VW doesn't have a heater and we have to have the windows open to keep the windshield clear. Gail, kids (Billy Krohn) and Stroms were on "Twin Cities Today" television show and each was given a silver dollar by a rich old coot.
1988 Set off for Waiheke Island. Moored in Man'O War Bay where frigates of old used to shelter. We swam to shore - I used an inner tube. Swam back for lunch. Rain cancelled fire on beach and roasting sausages. David cut his big and little toe. Ne finally caught some fish off the boat using baked beans. We saw phosorous plankton. Supper was canned - baked beans, spaghetti and sausages and salad.

1993 Awhitu with Whites and Kaitanis. I went out on the raft and the innertube. Bit of a drizzle but we got a sunburn anyway. Ian and I read under a shelter. Granny gave me a pencil sharpener shaped like a tube of paint. Trish called - Doug was "watching" boys. They got sunburnt all over, including butts since they were swimming naked.
