1964 | Started bellman job at Holiday Inn near airport (85¢/hour). Made $4.40 in tips for 4 hours - twice as much as I did selling hotdogs at stadium.
1971 | Fesaitu Fatiaki showed up and I jokingly asked him if he had a pie for me. He did (his sister made it). David was playing his guitar, so I joined on drums.
1973 | Telegram from Paul Mitchell - we don't have a phone. Mr Brown, landlord, explained how one gets milk in NZ - put empty bottle(s) with money or token in them by your mailbox.
1976 | Price of a 600ml bottle of milk doubled from 4 to 8 cents.
1982 | M - Cathy R, Lesser and I began a S2K Basic class. I sat up front and did most of the answering. Louis Stubens took us through defining and tables. We had two quizzes and I aced them, while Tom and Cathy did poorly.
1988 | Sanders for a barbecue (new patio furniture). Played cricket until I hit ball over fence into neighbor's pool.
1991 | Heasleys showed up out of the blue. After a cuppa and tour of yard we brought them to Whites to surprize them. Murray shouted us Chinese, wine (Montana Chablisse) and beer.
1992 | Gail and I went to Briscoe's receivership sale. Stood in line for 50 minutes and then the only suite we liked was $2500. Aldies in the afternoon, where David put on the menu system he had written for their computer. Fish 'n chips and then we went to Sanders (Mike and Lia at KV) to share a wine and check out the house renovation - second floor begun.
1993 | Put ladder onto barbecue so I could reach the upper branches of weed tree. A large one fell over the fence onto the school driveway.
1996 | Th - Doug filled hole in my front tooth again, in his newly airconditioned surgery. Doug over to play Rock Fever while we listened to his Dylan CD.
2001 | Opoutere. High = 27°C. Titania and I surfed in the best waves in a long time - one good ride after another. Had a smokey barbecue for supper. My job was to rake the weeds out of the pump pond and I also filled four bags with sand for the sandbox at home. Harvested plums and oranges. Chinese Checkers.
2002 | Berthe had a Goofy suncatcher made for me - she gave to Ne yesterday to hang in my room to see how long it would take me to notice.
2003 | Doug, Marcia and Jazz (always gives Chardy a workout) arrived with a bottle of Saints 2001 chardonnay. Ian came by for his swim and joined us for an hour or so of visiting and a bottle of Saints '99 Semillon which was complex and musky.
2004 | Senad called - he's working mornings for Manu, failed to make Pakuranga basketball team and is going to finish his masters this year. Set up my room for Yuki. She called a couple times from Wellington saying that her flight was being delayed. Gail and I got to airport right 5PM, but no Yuki. Her flight arrived at 6PM. Meal with the French Pinot Noir and a lot of remembering the Rosehill days all so long ago in 1997. She gave us a "Flower Girl".
2008 | Novus where Clinton repaired the chip in the Echo windscreen ($80). Papakura for a visit and Wendy's with Ann and Russell. Ann H joined us for a game of TP. Bruce Emery (a former pupil and basketballer) killed a boy who was tagging his Manurewa garage door. | Bruce |
2015 | Su - Colleen over for a pork meal with an average Crackerjack 2013 Shiraz. I made affagotos for dessert. Earlier in the day I complained about a detergent smell in the house. Turned out to be the pork, which was unedible due to an overdose of phosphate preservative.
2021 | M - Pulled out any camping gear that I could find. Watched The Last Leg and Mission Impossible III.
2022 | T - Zipped out to Bunnings to beat the rain. Loaded 13 pavers only to find that the checkout had closed. Went to 34OC and layed the 10 that were there.
2023 | W - Rain all day and power on and off stopped any activities so Ne over to play Catan. I went to 34OC to wait 100 minutes for the fibre assessor who never showed up. Back home to play Catan and Burgundy. Grand Master Russell called.
