1970 | Vaileka: Details in Peace Corps Journal.
1971 | Saw Korisi at Nausori so I got off the bus and rode back to QVS in the PWD lorry with Philip. Ghetto was glad to see me but she was well fed by the Rams so hangs out there. Had supper at Hargrove's. He was making a fancy lampshade.
1972 | Brought Chris and Gail to visit Dad at his apartment. Gail and I went to Dale and Cheryl's for supper, preceded with gin fizzes. Tour of house and I saw a lot of my furniture. Their Huskie, Xero, was very active. Tried some of Dale's rhubarb wine.
1974 | Bus from Nelson to Picton. Took the inter-island ferry to Wellington. Started out on the deck but it soon got too windy and cold so we moved inside. Taxi to Hotel Midland [ed. - demolished in 1980's]. Just a small room with wash basin. We scouted around to find Mt Cook bus station. Photo of Beehive. Had supper at a Greek place.
1975 | Brought Te to Bensons so Gail and I could go into Auckland. Got off at Karangahape Rd and walked it. Cab to the Embassy where we watched The Odessa File. Stopped at a Greek take-away before bussing back to Papakura. Benson's where we stayed for supper while David told me all about wargames. Robert: "Malecek, I saw a small tiny moon up the driveway". | Mary |
1976 | Phone installed (thanks to Rudy Bakker who was working for NZ Post we didn't have to wait three months): 83-492. After a curry lunch I went to school. Stopped in at Park's on way home. Met Catherine's father, Neil, her brother Leslie and her brother Brian and his wife Cathy (Tim Frank's sister) during my two hour visit. B+C gave me a lift home. Steve Burgess and Peter DuFaur came over to look at my Kenwood Jumbo. Ngaire and Nigel Mason stopped in.
1982 | F - Blizzard dumped 17.2" on top of the 17.1" from the 20th and over 36" in last 3 days (WCCO weather). Everyone at work just staring out at the snow. After a game of gin with Paul I was doing the new logic for the DEC messages at 12:45PM and Doug asked me: "What are you doing?" I said: "You know, all work and no play...that's Malecek". He got a big laugh out of it. Sent home from work at 1PM (figure kept there until after lunch, so cafeteria food not wasted).
1985 | T - 90 minute interview with Dave Saggiser for the Info Center job. Everything he said described me to a "T". He was impressed with the samples [ed. - I had taken existing training manual and revamped it into a more logical presentation, plus many other documents] and he liked the ideas I expressed. Chuck and Inez over to exchange gifts. Birthday cake for Inez with no-blow-out candles. Chuck told stories about a wasted neighbor, Elroy. *
1988 | Tom drove us to Taupo and we stopped at Huka Falls (video). Went in search of "Botanical Reserve", had a look at the lake and left. Stopped at Honey Village and that was a bust. Another Malley shortcut, this time through King country. Gail drove us to Waitomo Caves. Brief but interesting tour. Many grubs to be seen. Guide was excellent. Had a picnic there. Tom drove us to Hamilton. I made up another shortcut following 23 to almost Raglan and then along gravel road 22 forever to get us to Waignaro at 7PM. Kids went down the water shoots Ne got a pieced of glass in her big toe and was given a ticket for the next session for her trouble - she gave it to lucky David. Sat around in the hot pool and then had a swim in the cooler one. Left at 9:30PM and took two hours up #22 looking for possums (video) and finally got into Tuakau and familiar roads. Stayed up until 1:30AM chatting and star gazing with Tom. | Huka |
2003 | Went to Dunedin Botanic Gardens. Humungous place. Entered by the roses and that set my head off so we only did the Rock Garden area, where we saw a couple skinks scurrying about. Gail went to hospital and came back with her hair missing - no, not the radiation; she had it cut at a salon. |
|
2006 | Laps. Kathy S and Mike Howlett came over for a visit over a Saints '05 Gerwertztraminer. Its official - he has given her a commitment ring. Ian (back from SI) and family came by for a swim.
2010 | F - Installed the new chlorinator and gave the pool a shock dose. Went for a swim with Emery, then it was a "one and one" meal with Russell and Houghton joining in. Ian came along and, then later, so did Paul and Irene in our weekly dose of TP. |
|
2016 | F - Up and out the door at 11AM to go to Martin's where I joined Lee to play test "A Handful of Stars", "AuZtralia" and "Dominotes". Bought Ships and Onwards to Venus for $25 each. I am credited in each. And the 6 games/expansion I ordered from SB also arrived.
