| Fiji: Details in Peace Corps Journal.
| Lenati came over to talk about Taniela who failed Fiji Jr because he failed maths. Lunch at Whites and we played Donkey (old maid). Got supplies at Deve's and eggs from Mac's. Whites came and I taught them Pinochle. Poor Susi couldn't count meld and got upset.
| Watched a basketball game until Angi came with her new Tom H. Jim and Pat came and we ate. Gail brought me to airport where Kincy showed up to see me off. Took Western to LA where I was rushed over to Pan Am.
| Looked at a couple flats and found them depressingly rundown. Chas brought us to John McDougall's spry parents for sherry and dinner. All Blacks in the middle of the night. Not a test - but a mid-week 43 - 3 win over a Neath-Aberavon combined team.
| Tea and newspaper delivered to room at 7AM. On the bus at 8AM. Two drivers and hostesses. Stopped for morning tea outside of Foxton. Had lunch at Taihape. Found 7Up there! Along the desert road and Mt Ngauruhoe put on a show letting off steam (10,000' in two minutes). Driver stopped and we took photos. At Turangi we had a crew change. These guys put on the airconditioning and gave us a verbal rundown on everything we passed. Afternoon tea at Tokoroa. Slept until Papakura. Breezes are living next door to us in the new flats. Letter for Kleinsmith from Hargrove, so I called him and he came over to get it and we went to Breeze's so he could grill Simon about QVS. | Big Smoke |
| Crates arrived at 8:30AM. Peter and Steven Burgess helped shift them into the garage. Spoke to Bob McLaughlin for half an hour about physical fitness. Met Des Dunlop on my way home. Heather gave us two large pillows for our livingroom. Pruned peach in far corner and discovered a wooden chair. Bakkers returned our bookcase and Rudy told me that I was elected VP of Papakura Basketball Assoc. Had a chat with Michael Hall, who is our milkboy. Unpacked crate 3 and built a warddrobe out of it for the main bedroom. Sanders brought their lawnmower over. | Bob |
| T - Biked to school for first time (store it in the stationery room). Left Ne at Michewskis and went to Remuera to see specialist, Baber, who said I had severe loss of hearing in both ears; tonsilitis causes some of my ear pains but that tension is cause of most of my head problems. He put me onto muscle relaxant. Ate at Hungry Horse.
| I was resting on the couch and Gail stepped on my glasses which were on the floor. [ed. - I am unable to get a replacement frame or lenses that don't screw my head up for years.]
| Th - Three loads of lumber and roofing sheets to 62 Beach. Mr Barry gave us a tour of the yard. Met his son, Kevin, another All Black. Pool on front lawn - pipe leaking, so I told them to fix it. Told Mr Barry that we would keep his cat and that made him very happy.
| T&K took the car for the day while we unpacked the van. When they got back we played baseball/softball (T&K). Graham and Denny, a couple island boys, joined in (videos: me and David). Had fish 'n chips with a Penfolds Chardon for supper. Watched the videos from the trip. David and I then watched a sub-titled movie on St Vincent de Paul.
| Played "Hit and Roll" a baseball game where fielder tries to hit the bat, left on ground, before batter returns from base. Everyone else went for a walk, so I was there when Doug, Angela and Steve arrived. I made chicken, rice and courgettes for supper. Bridge in tent.
| Went into school and Des showed how he wants the various Windows setup and what I have to do on the DOS machines. Met the new secretary Lorraine Harvey. Bought two bargeboards at Benchmark ($90 each!). Eastern Rosellas in pear tree these days. | Lorraine |
| Th - Picked up James and brought him to school where he assembled the electronics components cart, shifted Macs to storage and shifted 486's to B2. Doug over with a video (music) jigsaw CD. Played RnR Scattergories.
| F - Simon and Chris brought a Triumph TR7 to be stored in our front yard corner. He gave me a bottle of wine, a white shirt and a pop riveter. White's came for Japanese Grand Prix.
| Sa - Auckland to pick up Senad and Titania. Secured building and I didn't know their apt number, so I walked to Queen Street bought a phone card and called them. Tuakau to pick up camping gear. Met Senad's father. Took back road to Miranda hot springs. Gail went wrong way and when she was turning around we were almost hit by an oncoming car that she hadn't seen. Whites had been there waiting since 10AM. We got there at 2:30PM. Gail called to office because her dogs were making such a racket in the van. They had spilt water container and in the process of cleaning up I threw out my medallion (Gail gave it to me 30 years ago to replace the one I had lost surfing in Hawaii) that I had hidden (shouldn't wear silver into a hot pool). Set up tents at Wentworth Valley DOC Camp Ground. Couldn't put up dome tent as poles were missing from when we lent it to Matthew. Played a few games of Chinese Checkers. |
|
| Dropped off a 100 word article for Waiuku newspaper about me and Senior Net. Went for a dip in the pool with Ian, who reckons his swims in our pool are his greatest pleasure in his whole life. When he came later for the final Grand Prix race he brought me a bottle of Wolf Blass 1995 Shiraz CabSav which rendered a spicy combination. Ian won the race on the final move and I was pleased to get a 3rd placing. Read all about it at Malleyweb. Boring race, so Tracy's desparation call because she couldn't find Scott's birth certificate (so he could buy a car tomorrow from a lady flying out to England) was welcome.
| Paul and Irene over and I brought them over to the netball courts where there is a huge sign "Irene's Here" and took a photo. Silver Fern Irene Van Dyke is coming to Waiuku to hold a coaching session. Had a Corbans '98 Amberley Riesling outside while I found out about Val's family. Then a meal and much good banter until 10PM. | Irene VD Irene B |
| Otago Museum and took in the Lyndsay Crooks, of Timaru, art exhibition - sort of loose bodies flopping around the canvas. Went through the Nature Galleries - birds and insects - before having to get to the hospital for more brain zapping. Stopped at a couple book stores on way back.
| Picked Christopher up. He told me about his BDO - mosh pit, crowd surfing, being spanked, hot tubing in the Lynx "Mile High Club". Made it to Stoney Bay around 4PM. Gail had a tent up, but on Ken Letcher's advice we took it down and were moving to a sheltered area when he came again and showed us more sheltered spot. So we drove over to there and set up tents: supply, Gail's, Ne's and Christopher's. Mini-Whites arrived and I helped them sent up our big tent. And finally elder Whites and their tent. Meanwhile, we decided to take Gail's down and put up Emery's, but the poles' elastics were shot. So we gave up and Gail used the supply tent. We managed to just about get camp set by dark and then tried to get a meal going. Steve's camp stove wouldn't work. So we used the trusty Coleman. |
|
| Gail got David and me up at 5:20AM to go to the airport. Spent 90 minutes in line before Niki gave us our boarding passes for Air NZ Flight 821 to Adelaide. Had to have a walking stick tip cleaned to get into OZ. Natalie, a trainee at Thrifty, set us up with a Toyota rental and we were off to Victor Harbor, where we had lunch (I had calamari) and we shared a Moo multi yoghurt. Woolies for groceries (picked up Bush Foods Breakfast and Nesquick cereals). Made it to R & R Country Cottage on Rosies Rd around 3PM and met our hosts, Ross and Rosalie and Ellie. They had more rain last week than in the previous 3 months Photo of "Lake".... |

| F - Ian stopped in, back from OZ. Got a couple Stephen King books for Gail and brought them and other items to Middlemore and visit Helen and John. Left a little after 6PM. Third stop Burger King to have a Summer Stunner (Jr Whopper, fries, Coke® and a sundae). 4th stop Papakura to work on Russell's computer and get my Warriors hat. 5th found me at Houghton's for TP. Back to finish computer and listen to a demo that Christopher has done. Didn't get back home until midnight.
| M - We brought our furniture drawings to Blackmore. Checked out where the cruise ships dock. Stopped at Colleen's for a short visit.
| T - Farm St to get see Kevin. Long chat as usual with Kevin. I said: "We talk too much". He told me that when he was 5 he was sent home with his mouth taped and a note saying he talked too much. He said that he argued about everything. e.g. teacher says something is "brown" and he points out that it was actually tan. So I said: "Sheldon". He says he can't watch it as it cuts too close to the bone. And whenever Sheldon does or says something his wife taps him three times... Exchanged emails with Jason Liebig for the first time and he came back straight away saying he'd buy 3 package items.
| Su - Day 157 of Delta/Omicron lockdown (1048 cases). 34OC to deliver the second bookcase and finish digging out the patio area.
