Fiji: Details in Peace Corps Journal.
Normal to be woken by Ghetto charging into my room and jumping onto my bed as soon as Woody lets her into the house. Today it was she and Spotty (Breeze's dog and Ghetto's sister) both bounding in together. Woody not around and I'm sure that Ghetto was in the house all night. So I reckon Ghetto must have let her in. She also got very jealous over Spotty being on the bed. She bit Spotty later and I had to spank and scold her. After that her feelings were hurt and she sulked. Poor Spotty is starving, can't stand still with hunger but Ghetto wouldn't let me feed her. So I lured Ghetto outside with a banana.

Put David's lawnmower together so he could help mow the front lawn. Gail was using Sanders' mower and I was scything the taller stuff. Mail lady peddled up and gave David a tape from mom, so listened to it: Joyce had an operation, Chris got fired. Met our insane neighbor, Mrs Dent, when she brought over beans and corn. George, Wayne and Michael Hall visited and told me about crazy Roger and their wasted summer in the Sin Bin. Hung my 26 collared shirts.
T - Kathy dropped Lia off and gave me a lift to Manuroa Road. I jogged two miles to Mike's workshop on Alfriston Rd. Cup of tea with Mike and Bill Rogers, then painted the lettering for three signs that he had carved. Helped saw and plane some wood and played around with the lathe. Mike gave me a mitre box.
Sa - Record high = 57°F. Went to Little Canada where we turned in 42 pounds of aluminum cans and 11 lbs of scrap to get $12.19. We bought Dick a checkbook holder: "You won't see me again, but you'll see my check". Kids took us out to eat at Burger King where they got a Star Wars poster and stickers. David and I walked home and an elderly couple guided us through Battle Creek park where we only found 4 cans.
F - At 2PM we began the move to Beach Road using Doug's and Morris' trailers. Made 3 loads when Mike S showed up and impressed us with his strength. Several loads later Doug showed up with KFC. 12 loads today and we stopped at 9PM. Gail returned Morris' trailer and left Ne there for the night. Mike went to get Kathy and Lia for coffee, while Doug, David and I went to KFC for more chicken and desserts. We can now get TV One.
Past Kawakawa Bay to a small beach reached by going down a steep cliff. We all got out for floats on the innertubes. Had lunch and then played basketball in the water. On way back we stopped to watch a chukka of polo at Clevedon. Couldn't get into the house, so I had to break Ne's window and then remove her door. Brought T&K to the airport.
Smithers for a barbecue lunch then Lilliputt. He won by 4, but I got three hole-in-one's. Ice cream and strawberries, played Lucky Charms game then home.
Over to Whites at noon and out to Karioitahi for some good surf under the clouds. Gail and I walked to the waterfall and climbed a path up to a hole-in-the-wall. Bridge on the porch.
Did the Murray's Walk; Ian and I taking forever referring to the book. We found world's tallest moss but couldn't locate any wineberry. Bridge until 4PM. Swim. After another hour of bridge Ian, Susi and Jackie left. David and I were able to find: Alpha Cenuri, The Coal Sack and Omega Centauri
W - Gail and I went surfing. Fantastic waves, each one a power ride. Cribbage on beach and visited White's. David and Michael went to NZ - Zimbawe cricket match.
Su - Whangamata beach. One jump and I knew that my Achilles strain was not healed so I just stayed on the beach. Gail left me with the dogs and they didn't stop crying until she came back. Played cribbage in the van while waiting for Senad who was having a great time in the water. Back at the camp we had supper and played Chinese Checkers.
Stephanie called to see how Gail was and to say she and family were off to Napier. Long walk to and up Baldwin St, the "World's Steepest Street". I discovered I had lost my Blue Blockers somewhere on the way down. A Japanese girl stopped us to ask where to find Baldwin, I asked her to look for my glasses as I didn't want to do the hill again. She came back down with them and the Kiwi guy who had found them. He toured the US with a marching band and told us about the many places he recalled. And all of that delayed us enough to walk back in a hail storm. [ed. - on TV that it isn't the steepest street anymore!]

Helped Graeme unload the lumber to the back yard. Brundell over to meet Graeme and see if he'll do his deck. Ian and Susi over for a swim. Whites came again for bridge; Susi and I not doing too well.
During the night the van rocked and the wind at times sounded like a jet plane. Up at 6AM to find Whites' tent collapsed, Gail's tent being flattened by the wind, big tent awning down and Christopher's fly gone. Also everyone else had decamped. Took us about 3 hours to take everything down, stuff it into the van. Let Chris do a mad ride down the swollen creek on his body board. Then it was four tries for me to get up the first rise. We followed slowly up and down the 20Km for dirt (now mud) road until we hit tarseal. Wasn't that much better as the roads are narrow and it was still up and down and twisty. Had to stop because of fallen trees and skirt around or through minor rock slides. We stopped at Thames for a meal at Goldfields. I was wearing my surfing gear including water socks and Chris had his wetsuit on with top half dangling down. email from Herbert saying he has a very rare cancer.

Drove into Port Elliot. Stopped at Crow's Nest Lookout to view the coast. Looked at 4 show homes at Elliot Gardens and had Meredith warn us that because of high cost of on-selling a retirement unit shouldn't be thought of as an investment. We liked the village's facilities and the houses themselves. After supper we went to Port Elliot and had a closer view of the coasts from Freeman's Nob. Walked along a path and there were a few guys out boogie boarding. Drove over to Victor Harbor and checked out properties in realtors windows. Shopped at Coles (better fruit and veggies than Woolies). Saw kangaroos on drive home at dusk and saw Comet McNaught.

I went to Middlemore to see Gail and her amazing puckering leg. Marianne is definitely leaving tomorrow as they have located the key to her house!
T - Had Colleen over to verify our passport photos and then brought her to Village restaurant to try the curry dinner. Back for a drink and visit.
Su - Clayton came after an evening service at a friend's "church". We tried another demolition derby but once again only lost 2 cars.
T - Smithers, sans Thomas who has a summer job, arrived at 11:20AM and stayed until 2:40PM for a visit - David retired from fulltime teaching.
Th - Hour walk including the beach - found 20¢ (Total=$7.90). After supper I put together a raised garden at 34OC and filled it. email and photo from Ian who damaged his achilles.
F - Pete told Coral that he ran into a man who was too young to be in the village - me!!!!
M - Day 158 of Delta/Omicron lockdown (1133 cases). Whole country moved to red level and it has finally rained after 37 days of sunny days.
