Gave gifts to the Lees and said our farewells. Dropped car off at Budget downtown and made my complaints known. So when I asked for a taxi they volunteered a lift to the train depot. Yes, train. We always try to get a train ride in for David. Seeing as how its his birthday it was fitting. One carries one's luggage onto the train with one. But I was down with a chest infection and we stored ours in baggage. Slept for 5 hours and missed the scenery.
Not far to the Oxford Towers from the depot so we walked it. It was 6PM and dark and it was MUGGY. Miserable hike and Ne managed to trip once. Hotel crowded and busy. Didn't help much when a lady on the elevator claimed that this was "Fawlty Towers". Elevator didn't really want to go [ed - searching the net I found someone complaining about that elevator in 2001] but we eventually made it to our small two room with kitchenette apartment.
Renee pointed out, while on the train, that Gail and I had forgotten our 16th anniversary yesterday (first time that I have forgotten anything). So we decided to find a fancy restaurant walking distance from hotel and make this THE meal of the trip. We got all dressed up and then went for a candle lit meal at a fancy Koala Oxford Red Room restaurant. The wine steward seemed like just off the ship and didn't know what he was doing. So I named him "Fritz" and kept up a running commentary of his exploits as he delivered drinks to the wrong table. Semi-dry '87 Houghton's Cabernet Rosé was a bit bubbly. Our waitress was excellent. I had sashimi (marinated salmon, sliced very thin) with a honey-dill sauce. Very tasty. I then ate a small chicken or was it a quail? Had Tia Maria and Irish coffee cakes for dessert.
