1970 | Hoffsis had written that they would be at Van Loan's until 5th and I should come down for some pinochle. Manasa had invited Murray and me to his village in Nailega which is very close to Cuvu where Hoffsis were. Since we didn't like the party extravagansa going on we got on the 7AM bus. Unfortunately, Tuesday is market day, so the bus made many stops along the way with people loading their items. I swear that we sat at one bridge for 15 minutes while 1000's of fish were stowed and then another long wait in Korovou as they were unloaded. Got to Nausori at 10AM (33 miles). We got off the bus at the first stop in Nausori figuring that we could walk faster then ride to the depot. Got to Tom's house just as Hoffsis were leaving. Talk about good timing - if I had missed them I probably would have stayed with Tom a day and gone back to QVS. We went into Nausori so Jim could buy a kerosene oven. In Suva we boarded a bus for Nadi and another 6 hours, stopping only at Navua for a soda. Murray and I slept on the floor in the living room and the long day and cool night gave me a cold.
1975 | Last day in New Zealand. Left Aldies via cab into town. Dropped our ASB passbook off at WERE, checked the mailbox at 29A one last time. Picked up our bond from Barfoot and Thompson. Over to Sanders were Trish picked us up. Sanders and Sandy Wirepa came for a chat. Trish leaving for S.I. tomorrow and we were kidding Doug about a ficticious girl, Janice. | Te-Lia-Kath |
1979 | Sa - Info packet from Warrick County, Indiana. Doug stopped in to see about painting his garage. Kids barbequed hot dogs for lunch. Looked at slides.
2011 | Th - Listened to the Twins 1 - White Sox 0 (Liriano pitched a no-hitter).
2012 | Sa - Drove on my lonesome to Papakura. Russell and I took 20 minutes getting to Ann's (roadwork on GSR and then wait for a train). Had a mild $7.50 brat while watching Under 20's roll over Brisbane. Then the big boys did the same in a very fast hard hitting game. Carpark gates don't open until 30 minutes after games ends. Doesn't stop Russell from driving on and letting the car run while waiting in line and not moving for 20 or so minutes.
2018 | Sa - Under 2 hours (set new passing record at 153Kph) to Russell's then headed to Auckland. No warmup game, Canberra-Titans game on big screen instead. I chatted with the big bloke seated next to me. Peter gave us our members packs. Warriors beat Tigers 26 - 4, but with injuries to Johnson and Luke. New guy, Lawton, scored two tries. Peter upset with kids who were non-stop back and forth from their seats. I noted how many people showed their ticket on their phone to the usher who liked she was 13 years old. Also noted that the smell of coffee surpassed that of he usual beer atmosphere. Out of the lot in record time and no traffic to TK and from there to home.
2019 | Su - Left at noon. Russell back from SI trip and very tired. The Warriors must have been tired, too, as they got rolled over by another bottom team, New Castle. Pathetic. Russell calls James on way home each game. James says: "Hi John". I say: "Get stuffed, James". At the end he says his good bye to me and I say: "Get stuffed James". But then they talk more and when it comes to an end he says: "I know - 'Get stuffed James'." Get to TK and I take off my Warriors shirt throw it on the ground and stomp on it. Stayed the speed limit on the way home and made it in 2 hours flat. Platz in garage. Driver's window popped out of place.
2021 | Up at 10AM so I could get to the hospital for X-Rays of my neck. AFL: Crows made 15 straight and had a 32 point lead over Hawks at the half with 84 points. They only could get 15 points and lost 102 - 99. Riley Thilthorpe had 5 goals on debut.
