1960 | I made my first long-distance call, to Jeannie. School - I gave my speech on "Dinosaurs" in English.
1969 | Bussed from San Jose to San Fran and flew to Hilo. Multimedia presentation on Fiji and a ceremony around campfire. Secondary group bussed to Ookala. Details in Peace Corps Journal.
1971 | Celebrated Dewali with Rams, Dhir and Ashok. We put candles (diya) in the front yard, followed by a big chow.
1974 | Kathy (still in hospital with afterbirth pains). Mike over with a bottle of wine (Mission hock) for a meal. We gave him a sheepskin rug for Lia Jonelle.
1976 | Tonka car carrier truck arrived from mom. She posted it on April 21, for Te's birthday. It had gone to Papua New Guinnea first [ed. not the first time that someone read "Papakura New Zealand" that way].
1981 | Su - Mom's to watch Vikings end Eagles win streak 35 - 23. Raked up 21 bags of leaves with Chris. Pina coladas and then supper. Ice cream for dessert while playing Hearts. Brought Chris to Lake Street.
1986 | Sa - Bond & Bond Electric City grand opening in Panmure with Ne. Got there at 7AM only to find 2000 ahead of us. In line until 8:45AM. Free bumper stickers and candy from Hauraki was only things we got.
1987 | Ian and I picked up Adlies' trailer. Loaded car and trailer and played volleyball until Simon arrived with his trailer. Had a convoy to Miro Place in Waiuku only to find no fridge.
1991 | Out the door at 7:30AM getting to the airport at 9:25AM only to find that Mom's plane didn't arrive until 10:40AM. Went to Metro Mall for a snack at Luby's. Got to Prescott at 2PM. Walked up to the water tank. After supper we looked at slides.
2001 | Pukekohe to get goldfish and gin. Into Liquorland and a voice behind me yells out "Microsoft" so I reply "Telecom" turn around and there are Peter and Pam with a trolley of booze, so I asked "How come I only get a cup of tea when I come over?". Trish's where I set up our old coffee maker, and we had coffee kisses with our drink. Couple of hours on the computer. Home for curry with Doug and then a game of TP.
2006 | Elaine visited - Bob back in hospital for a hip operation. Ian and I lost to the women in an evening of bridge with a very light Hardy's Shiraz Motara.
2007 | Spent the day with Graeme gutting the lower bathroom. Hail storm with heavy wind.
2008 | Gail and I worked our way to the Papakura Bowling Club rooms, where we were joined by Leighton, Jenny, Fiona and Duncan Mutch, and later Sandy, Mike and Charlotte for Harcourts Trivial Pursuit evening which wasn't a fund raiser but a company party. The other teams were costumed, but Leighton hadn't told us, so we were out of place, in a way. The wine flowed freely (I sampled 3 Gimblett Gravel's: Syrah '06, Shiraz '03 and SavBlanc '07) and it was a lively evening with the dwarf team breaking out into "Hi Ho Hi Ho its off to work we go". To be followed by Megbytes' "olay, olay, olay". We fared well and actually came first because Charlie figured out that the mystery person was Julia Roberts (C had theoretically lost us 5 points for being caught texting). Gail and Sandy took turns knitting - contest with 5 points for the longest. Caught up with Fred Heikell (met his wife, Joy) who came out of retirement (fire service and antiques) to go into real estate. As was Alastair Gooch from NZ Steel days. There was a lady from Mauritius who had brought along super hot and spicy sauce. Chatted with the compere, Graeme Viall, who is Colleen Viall's (1970's basketball) brother-in-law. We each received a Harcourts stachel with a Mission Cab Sav. | Fred |
2009 | Su - Angi called and told me about mom's funeral.
2015 | Su - Clayton picked up a hitchhiker and brought him along to the races. David, from Czech Rep, won the Formula 1 race but crashed out of Formula D. Max brought Russian fudge. Kim brought celery and carrots. Gail made a borsch that we had halfways through the FD race while listening to the Russian national anthem.
2021 | M - Hips had me awake most of the night. Day 62 of Delta lockdown (621 cases). Inflation running at 5% and we averge around 1.5% on our term deposits. Finally hit 20°C. Biked to 34OC - mowed and yardwork for a couple hours. Had an excellent 2020 Church Road Gwen rosè to celebrate 10 years at OSV.
2022 | T - AFL: Lions lost Big O in the first minute. It was a close match with many lead changes. Daniher kicked a goal in final minute to elimate the Tigers 106 - 104. Then Swans beat Melbourne 89 - 61.
