Nukulevu Island, Fiji
Sept 1970
During a 1970 two-week term break the boys who couldn't go home (about 30 in age from 10 to 20) camped on the waterless island near the school. I spent one week with them and had a great time, getting away from the duties at school.
The island is about 100 meters long with five or six palm trees and lots of 10ft bushes. The boys set up two big army tents, sleeping 8 each it and seperate small ones made out of ground cloth.
Sep 4 Philip Low took us over in his small motor boat (movie). Got there at noon in time for lunch (salty casava, tinned sardines and tinned peaches). Murray was burnt to a crisp. Atmores had come over to look for shells (what are the odds they'd find any with 30 boys searching them out for food for a week?). Then McDougall and Breeze showed up in John's new boat. Rongorongo carried Simon to shore. Eric went back leaving Murray and me in charge. Rongo, Baracuda and I went on the reef hunting for food. We spent about two hours in the water and filled a bucket (movie). When we got back dinner was ready (curried corn beef and casava) (movie) and Cagi was ill. So we contacted McDougall via walkie talkie. I took some sunset shots. When I got back the boys were playing cards and Risk. It was a night of tall tales and no sleep (beach too bumpy and a snorer).
