OBITUARIES

LEROY FISHER

My Step-Uncle, the kind of fun uncle every family should have. The man was an English teacher’s nightmare the way he wrote, but he was always entertaining. I once sent him a reply trying to emulate his scat style. And like that letter I can only try to emulate being half the man he was. A truly beautiful person who loved life and lived it well. (Jim Fisher's words)

KEN ATMORE

I taught with Ken for three years in Fiji. He was a Kiwi, so we were able to meet up with him and Colleen over the years, and a little more often these past 9 months. I think he was probably the most laid back person I ever met. He appeared to be half-asleep, while walking or talking, but was ever alert and quick to comment on life's absurdities, usually with a twinkle in his eye and a subtle smirk.

ORLANDO - In December 1975 Gail and I stayed with Leroy and Donna Mae for a few days. Their son, Sean, gave us a tour of Disney World where his father worked. For my birthday we joined Leroy at a Buena Vista night club for some jazz, which he loved. We also took in the...
ORCA - named Shamu at SeaWorld. We spent a whole day there and enjoyed the shows, the aquariums, Japanese Village where women dived for pearls and especially the dolphins.
OOKALA - A small sugar mill town on the Big Island of Hawaii. I spent three months there in 1969 doing my Peace Corps training. A true paradise with great weather and access to remote surf beaches. I fell in love with the place and I made lifelong friends among the locals. We have been back to visit three times. The mill closed and it is a ghost town.
OPAL - 1. My uncle Jerry’s wife (photo). 2. The ring I bought for Gail in Australia for our 16th anniversary. 3. The stuff Newsy deals with on a daily basis.
OPOUTERE - A small settlement on the lower Coromandel coast. For about 7 years we stayed at du Fresne’s place there. A short walk to the practically private beach with great surfing. Home to a dotterel sanctuary. A great place to get away, not live in tents and close to Whangamata (another great surfing spot).
OZ - Australia, eh? We made three trips there in the past 4 years. Stayed south of Adelaide in Jan 2007, did Newcastle to Coffs Harbour in Dec 2007 and the Great Barrier Reef and northern Queensland in November 2010.
OPERATION - A minor one to remove a lump from my back. In addition to the 7cm scar, I will now have a large depression in its place instead of the bump.

OLD FRIENDS

The marvelous Internet has helped me re-connect with many friends and relatives who I never would have found any other way. In the old days you marvelled at how many credit cards you carried. Now its how many "social networks" you belong to. In NZ the main site is oldfriends.co.nz (defunct in 2016). I also belong to Facebook, Classmates.com, Flikr, FriendsReunited.co.nz, MySpace, Friendster, GradFinder, Graduates.com, MSMessenger, Skype, MyLife.com and Linkedin. In truth I don't really use these much.

OPENERS

Screw top bottle caps were introduced to make the opener obsolete and life better. Now Summit beer is bringing back the old style claiming they are easier than screw tops. I wonder if it because the arthritic hands of we baby-boomers can’t unscrew them suckers.
