2013 - No. 3         www.malecek.com

Only been to few. Growing up in the Twin Cities I have been to Como Park Zoo in St Paul many times and the smell from the concrete cages of the cats lingers on. Minnesota Zoo a couple times in the ‘80s. One visit to the Mankato Zoo.

Have watched the Auckland Zoo grow over the years. Sadly, Kashin, the elephant, is no longer there.

Took in one in Vancouver in 1975 and Oregon Zoo in Portland one day in 1985.

Ferried on Sydney Harbour to Taronga Zoo in 1988.

Spent a day in 1990 at the world famous San Diego Zoo only seeing a small portion.

However, taking in a Franklin zoo in 1978 only took an hour.

XYLOPHONE - David played one of these while in elementary school. And that led him into drums. We bought a full kit in the late 80’s and he had lessons. Eventually ended up playing bass and snare in the Papakura Brass Band.

YOSEMITE - Went there in April 1985. Panoramic scenes as soon as we hit the valley. Many big waterfalls and a few tunnels. Eventually found Army Camp in Curry Village and checked out the tent 40. Walked over to THE falls and took many photos. On the way back we walked right next to a herd of mule deer and coyote. Saw Steller's jays all over. Our tent cabin had a wooden floor. Kids in sleeping bags, Gail and I had 6 blankets and wore every piece of clothing we could find. Next day we did "4 mile trail" and went as far as could. Got to a point where there was snow and the trail was washed away. Photos.

YACHTS - I was a useless crew member on the Independence Day Suva-Levuka race on Breeze's catamaran. Started at 6:39AM, kept getting clogged with weeds in the river and I think every boat in the race passed us. o note time and boat that passed us or that we passed. We didn't passed any. Once we got around Toberua Island the gas line clogged.. When Simon cleared it and tried to start the engine, the cord ripped. We drifted dangerously close to a reef. So it was man the sails and we managed to move along the north coast of Ovalau at a good clip because of a storm blowing in. Ratu Edward Cakabau gave out the awards and we got one for being last.
We were on Simon's tri-maran in New Zealand waters several times, including a week in 1988 (photos). In 2010 we were on a large one when we went to the Great Barrier Reef. (photos).

ZION - We loved this National Park and spent two days hiking various trails in 1997. A definite must for grandeur alone. Like Yosemite we only saw a small portion of the place. On Hidden Valley trail we passed a group of elderly Brits having a “tea party” with fancy cups and silverware. Gail reached her limit but I carried on to the point where the ledge was very narrow and you held onto the chains secured to the rockface. (Photos).

X-tra Rich?

David has returned from Minnesota after a six-year OE. And he did it in style. Bought Premium Economy and was bumped to Business Class. Which meant he had a bed to sleep on. He also has a beard!

Ne is painting again and turning out beautiful pieces that are more intense in color and design. She has sold quite a few smaller works and has two commissions of larger works to do. Hopefully, she will have enough to have an X-hibition next year..

In New Zealand we have $1 and $2 coins. They are made of bronze and aluminum. So they why are the called “gold coins”?
As in "gold coin donation".
