We have been known to plan vacations around waterfalls. Most spectacular is easy: Niagara. I think most beautiful would be McKenzie. Here are the ones that I can remember. (click to see photo)

WAIUKU - Rural town, with no traffic lights. We wanted to get away from Papakura which had gotten too big. We liked Waiuku because of its proximity to a surf beach. Gail got a job there and we lived there for 13 years. I taught night classes at the college and ended up making quite a few client/friends. I loved how the people in the shops knew me by name and had time to chat. The main reason that we chose it was because our best friends lived there. That’s Ian and Susi...
WHITE - Ian is from Scotland and he was teaching at QVS in Fiji. He married his Fijian house girl, Susana.
They picked me up in Suva and brought me to the school. And from that instant I knew we would be lifelong friends. After we moved to New Zealand we made it back to Fiji three times and Ian came to stay with us twice. In 1987 Fiji suffered a couple coups and things weren’t looking good for foreigners, so Ian wanted out. I happened to be in a position where I could hire him. Our two families pretty much did everything together on weekends and for summer vacations. Their eldest, Steve ended up marrying a girl from Nauru and they are teachers in NZ with 3 kids. Douglas and Matthew are both managers and live in Australia with their Aussie wives. Doug has 3 kids. Tracy is married to a supreme board game playing entrepreneur and they are in Auckland. She has put her managerial career on hold hoping to start a family. The youngest, Jacqueline, changed her name to Dominque and works in Wellington with her partner. Ian likes to Skype with...
WOODY - Interestingly, I have worked with two teachers each named David Woodward. The first one was a Peace Corps Volunteer and I lived with him for two years. He has led an interesting life working in various countries in consulting positions to governments. He has ended up in his family’s home, built in 1731. We have been to it twice over the years. Dave also married a Fijian—in fact he has done so twice. The other Woody was a scatterbrained hippie English teacher at Rosehill College. He ended up on a commune making pots and drinking homemade…
WINE - When I was a teenager my mother gave me a bottle of Mogen David wine on my birthdays. When we first moved to NZ wine was pretty lousy, mostly fortified in large jugs. Over the years NZ has become a first class producer and I have become a regular consumer. According to my database I have tried around 1380 different wines. I prefer dry with good tannin. So much wine, so little time.
