VIENNA - I was born there, moved to Minnesota, home of the....
VIKINGS - The NFL team stayed at the Holiday Inn the night before home games. I got to know most of the players over four years. As bellman I would bring room service to them. Long after bed check, some would sneak to a room for late night poker laden with alcohol, cigarettes and cigars. No wonder they never won a Super Bowl.
VEHICLES - I remember how great owning my first car felt - a ‘50 Pontiac that I got for $50 in 1963. Traded it in for a ’58 Chevy Impala in 1964. In 1968 I scored the dream car: a red ‘64 Olds Cutlass convertible. Had a Buick Riviera for the 7 months in ‘75 we were in MN. Family wagon (’80 Ford) in 1982. Back in NZ it Japanese: a ’78 Toyota. ‘82 Mitsubishi and a ‘92 Daihatsu that we had for 15 years. My favorite vehicle: an ‘86 Toyota Hi-Ace van that served us well for 19 years. Was sad to let it go for a ’04 Toyota Echo. After Gail totaled that we got a ’09 Toyota Yaris.
VESTIBULAR SCHWANNOMA - A tumor that grows on an ear’s nerve. Gail had one zapped by stereotactic radiation in 2003 (MalleyGram). She has lost all hearing in that ear. A cyst grew inside of the dead tumor so in 2010 the whole thing was removed and miraculously no side effects from the operation (MalleyGram).
VISITORS - Shouldn’t surprise anyone that I have kept track of who has visited us over the years. For the most houses are Trish (even came to Minnesota), Breezes, Whites and Colleen Atmore. Currently tied for most visits to OSV are Russell and Ian. (Spreadsheet)
VINEYARDS & VALLEYS - We have been to a few vineyards over the years. Several in west Auckland, one outside Thames (SYC), one in Napa Valley (Beringer), a few in Barossa Valley (July 1st 1988) and one near the Murray river mouth (Currency Creek).
VEGEMITE - is an Australian yeast product used as spread on bread. In NZ we prefer our own Marmite. Unfortunately, the factory in Christchurch was destroyed in the earthquakes and the country has been without since. A jar of Marmite sold on TradeMe for $2115!!!
VERONICA - Brasilian high school student who lived with us for ten weeks in 1997. She has ended up in Germany where she was a flight attendant and is now a brewer of beer.

In our corner of Ocean Shores we have an International flavour with Anna, an 89 yr old Dane (plays a Steinway, pétanque and Scrabble); a Dutch couple, Else and Henk (camper-vaners); a Hungarian couple; Welsh couple, Terry and Brenda and we Yanks. The remainder are Kiwis: Jill the artist, Heather, Peg, Janet the embroider, June and Ron (pianist), Ian and Ngaire, Fred and Dawn (Motor Caravaners). Our pétanque buddies include Ash, retired builder, and Alan, former glazier—both are 83. | ...can you use a voodoo doll to give someone else varicose veins? |
