Barossa Valley |
We had a look through Central Market. Great for fresh food and a few "junk" stalls. In the afternoon we drove to Barossa Valley. We stopped at Chateau Yaldara, declined a tour,
tasted mediocre '84 cab-sav, chard and non-descript '87 rosé deciding not to buy any. Short hop down the road to Karlsburg Estate. 1981 ½ bottles still there but not so good, still bought a couple for Mike, who had brought one back for me.
Girl there was very helpful even is she was a beer drinker. Bought a couple '84 cab-sav and '87 Dry Rosé. Head hurting, so we stopped at a curio shop in Tanunda, then checked into the Barossa Junction Motel which is railway carriages converted into rooms. We started off in #12 ($66) but heater wouldn't work (a must as it was winter and very cold at night), so we were moved to #11 which is a suite (two carriages) with double bed in one room, bunks in another, formal dining room, big bathroom, writing desk and three exits - one leading to a private courtyard (video). Water was yellow and undrinkable, which should prove that they don't add it to the wines. So the carafe in the fridge wasn't a white wine but water and the toilet didn't need flushing.... We dressed up for supper in the dining car - $77.50 for roast beef, calamari, chicken and fillet minon plus fancy desserts. David had a chocolate train filled with whip cream and strawberries (video). Had an '87 Kaiser Stuhl Rosé that was bubbly. Kids used Indian pants found in Murray's boot and I stripped down to my red underpants. Soaked in hot tub until I got sleepy, then sat in the heated pool while kids swam and played for an hour (video). I had the bed to myself and the others slept in the bunks. |
