EXCHANGE STUDENTS
During 1997 and 1998 I met students from all over the world. At one stage we had Veronica, from Brazil, living with us. Her father visited us the following year.
Chihiro and Yukiko from Japan. Yuki stayed with my father and friends in Minnesota and she returned to NZ to visit with us. Her sister and teachers also visited us. Fabiola from Bolivia was my favourite and was lots of fun. She is now a dentist in Spain with a daughter.
Laure (Belgium) adopted us as her host family and spent a lot of time with us.
Gustavo, Tatiana. Renata and Diego all from Brazil. Jo and Celia from Argentina. Ong from Thailand (her brother Golf visited us). Senad a Croat from Germany.
Titania from Singapore became Ne’s friend. Radzeal from Malaysia. Shadi from Turkey and Sarah from the Philippines.

It took me seven years to do the A-Z MalleyGrams. In some cases I had to leave things out due to space restrictions. I also reckon I have accumulated a few more items during that time. So I bring you E 2.0 The orignal "E" has been updated read it
eMAIL - The first email I sent was to Woody on October 15, 1995 and two weeks later he replied. In 1997 Rosehill hooked up to the Education Dept’s Internet system, which was text only. I was the designated email address for the school. A few exchange students wanted to email home. So they were sent to me and that is how I became friends with so many teenagers from around the world.
EIGHTIES - The decade found me quitting my teaching job and we flew from New Zealand to Minnesota stopping at Disneyland on the way. It took four months to finally land a job with the StPaul Cos and be trained to program for a mainframe computer. After a year of renting we bought a house in Cottage Grove and for the next four years we lived the typical suburban lifestyle. In 1985 I quit that job and we returned to NZ, where I had a job waiting at New Zealand Steel to run the Info Centre (personal computers). We found that our house in Papakura was too small so in January 1986 we moved to a large place with a very large yard filled with established fruit trees. In 1987 I found out that I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS or ME). In 1988 we spent a month travelling Australia.
EDUCATION - My family were teachers. Me, of course, teaching art, mathematics, science, physics, radio, pop music, basketball and computers. Gail was a primary school teacher and was in every Papakura school except for the one that was next to us. David taught computers to adults in night school, as I did. Ne also taught computers one year to students who were kicked out of normal schools. She also taught them job skills. It shouldn’t be a surprise that most of our friends were also teachers.
EASTER - I have memories as a child dyeing eggs with Rit kits. My mother kept a European tradition of blowing the egg interior out through a pin hole before decorating the shell. We colored eggs with our kids using food coloring. We brought the kids to Auckland’s Easter Show which is similar to a State Fair with carnie games, rides, circus, animals, wine, art, entertainment etc... |
