QUARRIES

The grandparents’ farm where I was raised was lousy for crops. Why? Because it was on an alluvial deposit of long gone glaciers and filled with small stones. That gravel pit was my first quarry. My father said as a teenager he and his mates raced around the bottom of it kicking up rocks and ruining many clutches.

In my adult life I have been to two former quarries.

Wrights Watergardens and Cafe, near Patumahoe, is filled with lilies. Lovely setting to meet friends for a meal or coffee.

The other one, Te Puna, is in Tauranga and volunteers have made trails with different types of flora. It has a butterfly enclave and a variety of sculptures.

And, of course, my favourite British band of the 60’s was once known as the Quarrymen.

It took me seven years to do the A-Z MalleyGrams. In some cases I had to leave things out due to space restrictions. I also reckon I have accumulated a few more items during that time. So I bring you Q 2.0

          QUARTERLY REPORT

QUARTER-POUNDER - As hard as it may seem I don’t think I have ever had one these things. More a Big Mac guy in my early days and Filet-O-Fish in more recent times. This particular item shows the power of marketing. Even though we live in a metric country this is still sold under its US moniker. Apparently, once the 4oz patty is cooked is comes out at 2.8oz.

QUARTER-HORSE - I have never owned one but rumor has it that parts of these can be found in the afore mentioned Quarter Pounder. Leaving us to ponder on how many Quarter Pounders can be made from a Quarter Horse.

QUARTER-DOLLAR - You’d probably need a handful of the old two-bit coins to buy a Quarter Pounder. We don’t see this denomination in New Zealand. But I do have in my collection a 1776 bi-centennial commemorative quarter (sold most of them to Doug Siems before we left the States in 1985). And I also hold dear a Minnesota Quarter. Yep, there was one produced for each State

LATIN / FRENCH QUARTER - I have never been to either of these trendy tourist spots in New Orleans / Paris. That is because we had our very own…

QUARTER-ACRE - When we arrived in New Zealand in 1973 it was every Kiwi’s goal to own their own Quarter Acre piece of Godzone. So much so that that a book entitled Half Gallon Quarter Acre Pavlova Paradise describing the average NZer was very popular.

QUARTERBACK - My favorite Viking QB was Fran Tarkenton who made scrambling an art form. I talked to him many times because the night before a home game the team stayed at the motel where I worked.

QUIZZLE ME THIS Malley Muses
...Ps and Qs
I once joined a couple mates to do a Music Quiz at the Queens Head Pub in Auckland. We came in third and won a supply of beer — which I don’t drink!
As a teacher I gave daily quizzes at the beginning of each class. The very first question each year was “How do you spell my surname?” Always got strange answers to that one.
Back in the late 1980’s we played Teacher’s Quiz with the kids.
Further back, in Fiji, a Sunday evening highlight was listening to the “National Quiz” played between high schools.
Why do we have to mind our “Ps and Qs”? How do we do that? What happens if we don’t?
I don’t mind “P” so much but “Q” is another matter.
In Scrabble we say: “May the Q be with you”.
