1960 | English: impromptu speeches: Santa, shrinking and how to kill a roach (which was funny since we had the dreaded Pat Roach for History). Instead of Latin we had gym. Schindler, Laughlin, Kelley, Pilacinski and me against Slater, Sullivan, Ball and Ward. Art club where we did charcoal sketches. Got some colored chalk and began putting up a Nativity scene on homeroom blackboard. | Pilacinski |
1969 | Hawaii: Details in Peace Corps Journal.
1973 | Stopped at a lookout for last glimpse of Lake Taupo. Stopped at impressive Huka Falls and Waireki Geothermal Station. Long, dusty road to Orakei-Karako geyserland. Took jetboat across man-made lake to wander about the hotsprings and check out Ruatapu cave. Elephant. Not elephant. Had lunch there. The owner says he gets around 500 visitors a day in the summer. |
|
1975 | Mom brought David to Town's and Bob brought me and Gail to Reiss' where we waited 40 minutes for Chris and Angi to arrive. Had lobster and an excellent '72 Bernkastel. Home to open birthday gifts. Chris gave me a record cleaning kit and Angi gave me Facts in Five. Mom gave me The Game of Risk and wine. |
|
1978 | Sa - Central School where Te was in a trike-a-thon (Home Movie) to raise money for his Kindy. He had to ride his trike around the parking lot ten times. He thought it was tremendous stuff, with the crowd cheering the riders on. There was a lolly scramble (Home Movie). Then we hung out with Fornuseks at the sausage sizzle where George Hawkins was manning the barbeque (Home Video).
1979 | Su - We went to the Manurewa pool for an hour. The fellow next door gave the kids old NZ pennies that had been chromed. Mrs. Dent asked Gail to turn off the laser.
1987 | Angi called - Mom in Albequerque hospital. Car bashed off road by truck - helicopter to hospital - intensive care - glass in eye, many bruises, cracked hip and much pain.
1993 | Buried Village where Dad had a hard time getting his head around the immensity of the explosion, and that there had been a hotel and roads there a 100 years ago. He probably thought that NZ was like Africa, and Fiji, just a bunch of natives. In the trenches. Then we went to the Blue and Green Lakes. He had a great time with the black swans on Lake Rotorua (video). Rainbow Springs for lunch. Farm show was interesting with its sheep herding and shearing demos, cow milking and the bull (video). Renee took part in a feed the lamb contest (video). Walked through the park and saw tuatara, wallabies and kuni kuni. Went through the Kiwi House. |

2001 | Chris called to tell us that he is getting married tomorrow (9th there) at the Chapel of Love in the Mall of America.! Reception brunch at Szechuan Star. Spoke briefly to Celia photo and then a long chat with Angi. Tony and Rhonda to be bestman and maid of honor with Bob H giving Celia away.
2007 | Vicky and Morris first visit to 33 Colombo.
2008 | Up at 8AM to get Gail to the Super Clinic. In little over 2 hours she had her casts removed, was x-rayed and came out with a moon boot.
2009 | W - Kauaeranga Valley where David and I did the Webb Creek trail. There were teenagers bustling along the track and I struggled up to the Hydro Camp. But from there it was all downhill. We didn't get onto Billy Goat Falls, and could only manage one glimpse of it through the scrub, which is higher and denser after all these years. (More Photos) Got back to the car at 4PM. Gail had done a couple of the easier walks along the river while waiting for us. Stopped at Kauaeranga Dairy but got cold drinks instead of ice cream cones. Drove to Matamata and checked into the Maple Lodge which is run by a couple dogs, eh?. I chose it because it was owned by Denise and Clive Willimas and was wondering if it were the same Denise and Clive I knew from Rosehill - no. Drove out to the Opal Hot Springs where David and I swam and Gail soaked. Place needs TLC and as usual didn't live up to advertisements. There was a small girl full of energy going down the slide to be caught by her father. A much quieter Maori girl and her father, a couple teenagers who just snuggled in the midrange heated pool and an older lady down from Whangarei to assist her mother. Chose Workmans Café and Bar and got a table next to the open window. Gail tried an Elderflower drink. I had an absolutely smashing large cod. Poor David was hit by sunstroke and couldn't eat, so we "doggie bagged" his chicken meal and got him back to the motel where he collapsed onto the floor. |

2021 | Th - Day 112 of Delta lockdown (6516 cases). Ne over with Party-In-A-Bag for a belated 75th party. She gave me a scratchie for a Ford Ranger, Bahlsen Akora, Nutters Ginger Kisses, Copper Kettle Sweet Chilli chips and a cheesecake. Gail gave me sunglasses and a lavender bottle holder. Played Yedo and Ne won by a large margin. Turkish and Castles of Burgundy. Ate the cheesecake which was made with neufchatel cheese.
2022 | F - Rain cancelled trip to Whites so we played Terraforming Mars (Gail didn't have a single tree).
2024 | M - Played "Bora Bora". Then it was Australian Gran Prix. Poor David, his two cars spun off six times (and he chose the dice). Gail won and I came in 2nd and third. After a chili supper with ambrosia for dessert we played Terraforming. David and I played Istanbul and made a couple rules we weren't following all these years. Village gave us a potted plant for Christmas, Adiantum Ocean Spray (fancy for Maidenhead fern).
