1967 After work Kincy, Steve and I drove to Newstrom's hunting shed/cabin on North Star Lake. We ate supper at Sportsman cafe, arriving at lake at 10:30PM. Road/track completely overgrown so we had to hunt for the cabin in the dark. Found all kinds of junk inside.see photos.
1976 The first Telethon in NZ - money going to Child's Health Foundation. 24 straight hours with many groups trying to set world records for sponsorship. It was up to $50,000 at midnight.
1980 Th - Alarm didn't go off - Gail woke me at 7:15AM and I was out the door in 20 minutes. Ran two red lights, did 70mph and was only 5 minutes late for appointment at St. Paul Cos in Woodbury. Talked to Diane Hinds for half an hour (mostly about New Zealand) then 5 tests over 90 minutes. She brought me a cup of tea (since I had missed breakfast).Clerk asked me if I had any questions and I asked if I could write down a word, recondite, that I didn't know. She exclaimed: "Only one!" She didn't realize that I was making a joke about the word, eh? Later, after I had finished, she told me, confidentially, that I was the first person to get 100% on the English test. Diane told me that there were 35 applicants for the position in the training class and that I would be invited back for interviews. Called Sandie M and she said only 3 are being asked back, so the odds are good
Western Life
1981 F - Went to Silver Lake on Century Ave in North St. Paul. Roasted hot dogs and had a picnic lunch. Played tennis and went for a swim in the lovely warm water. Meanwhile David created a series of lakes with a river connecting them to the real lake.
1982 Sa - Gail dropped me off at work. Rebuilt old version of GLGRDCOM, compiled it and restarted the job. Abended again - out of balance. So I called Eliason and he came in. Gave me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Gail and kids showed up at 1PM, so I gave them a tour and let the kids play "Guess the Number" on the computer. Ran several more tests while John was rewriting to balance by policy. Finally occurred to me that it must be caused when I removed/shortened display messages. I finally noticed that a full-stop was missing. John explained that the computer thinks everything is a message until it encounters a full stop. So that was why the programming didn't execute. Easy fix and John brought me home at 6PM.
1987 Breezes for soup and pizza. I had made a life-size poster sketch of Simon in a boxer stance with the words "Thump your Daddy". That is because Simon always "thumps" me in the arm. So I gave that to Chris and we played a version of "Pin the Tail" using boxing gloves. I also brought a couple computer box foam squares that Simon wanted; he and I put them on around our waist and then spent the evening bumping into each other and whatever else got in the way. Sort of a human bumper cars. Gave Chris and David ping-pong ball guns and we used them on the Daddy poster (video). Four hours of Trivial Pursuit and you haven't played it until you do with Fran (video).
1988 OZ trip: Glenelg. Go to Trip Report
1994 Watched All Blacks lose 21 - 20 to France. First time that France has won a series. First time that ABs have lost 3 in-a-row since 1971. First time that they have lost 2 in-a-row at home in 45 years.
1995 Brought a load to Aldies and painted the mailbox lavender (for anniversary).
1996 W - Steve and Sally were married today at 11AM at the Auckland Registar's Office with Ian and Matthew looking on. We brought a cake that Gail had made. Morton Brut Champagne toast to the newlyweds when they arrived. Ian and went off to get gas for the barbeque, wood for the fireplace and beer for Lui. We were joined by Steve and Sally's roommate, Veronica and her fellow, Deven Sharma. Chatted with him until chow. Brian and Kay Meikle, Kaitanis and four of Steve's mates joined us in the evening. Girls went to school to look at ball photos. Ian and I had to rescue them when flat battery stopped them from returning. When most had left the Malleys and Whites played Charades.
Deven

1998 F - Bali and Des farewelled me at morning interval. Told everyone about the Bullen Boomerrang and that I might be back [ed. - Turned out that I did return the following term as a contractor]. They gave me a $40 Whicoulls voucher. Douglas and Matthew in shock. Ong gave me a real hug. Steven Munro called in to say "hi", so I sent him to Don Rolle to see about taking over for me. Des and I hugged. Christine McLeod gave me a hug and cried. But most didn't say anything and just a few wished me luck. Whites over for bridge.
2004 Rotten day with rain but it held off the first half of the Warriors game and they built an 19 - 0 lead. Came down in sheets during the second half and they managed to hang in even with a slippery ball, winning 20-10. Then it cleared for the walk to the car.
2006 Gail and I went to Needhams (house sitting for the week). Had a soak in the hot tub. Set up Bob's new computer.
2010 Sa - Russell came by to drive the rental van to help me shift Renee's bed and chairs to her flat. Then we had a look at his mother's freezer while we were in the area. Turned out that Ren at Hire-n-Haul in Pukekohe is Reuben Wiki's cousin.
2014 Th - Both elbows are raw requiring bandages (tossing and turning in bed).
2015 F - Scrabble at Anna's and David won by one point. Concordia. Had a chicken chimichunga, sour margarita and a fondant pear at Barrio Brothers. Home for another game of Concordia. Irene called. Paul collapsed and is in Waikato Hospital on life support. Blood clot in brain.
2016 Su - Boys over for Austrian race - I provided Red Bulls. Shortened race due to time limit of 3 hours. I came in a respectable 3rd and 5th. Adi having a good time yelling for a "20". After bangers and mash (courtesy of Clayton) and mushy peas (Kim) we had a strudel that Gail made. The British Grand Prix was also time limit shortened and I could only manage 5th.
2020 F - 90 minute walk along beach in 9°C wind. I'm either tough or stupid. Watched Cats eek out a 47-44 win over Demons in the lowest scoring first half of the year.
2022 Su - The car would only play 4 songs from the USB, so I listened to a Christian station on the way there and talkback on the way home. Been 1038 days since I last drove to Te Kauwhata. Big changes on Highway 2 from Bayfair to Baypark. Cloud in Kaimais had us down to 60Kph, then rain to Matamata, but cleared up near TK. At Waharoa the old public toilets were demolished and replaced with 4 modern metal ones. The Black Dog cafe is now painted red. We got to Mt Smart in time to hear the end of Dave Dobbyn's set. Place filled up with 26,009 fans. Peter shows up and says he thought I wasn't coming so he had two extras coming and I had to give up my seat. He pointed to the seat in row below and said I could sit there for awhile. Russell had told me that Owen was on the North end. So I wandered over there and actually found him. He is on his 3rd wife and is going to V8 races. Met his son, Mark, and his Maori friend, Paul. Most of the action was at the south end so we didn't see much. Muroki played at halftime. Russell came at half time and asked me why I left. Apparently, there was no problem and Peter simply meant that I had to move one over to where he normally sits. So I was able to see the second half. The game was interrupted 5 times by yahoos running across the field. Pretty sure that is a new record for RL. Warriors beat the Tigers 22 - 2. We had passes to Corporate Lounge so we checked it out. A fellow was playing guitar and singing very loudly and the place was filled with people shouting at each other. We didn't stay long.
