1967 Darrell and I won 12-5-5 over Don and Dan, Les and Jon in Home Run Derby. Then we played basketball. Went to Holiday Inn to get my final paycheck ($50.67) and ran into Sam Goldberg (a regular guest and I always gave him a room, even if we were full) and said my "goodbye" so he gave me $5 for drinks and his card saying "If I ever needed a job...".
1975 Not learning from our previous experience we went out night fishing on Woody's boat with Kelera's grandfather, Takai. First anchorage was too choppy and the anchor rope got caught up in the propeller. Finally moved behind the breakwater - no fish. The tide had gone out when we got back and another boat had taken David's place so we had great trouble trying to secure his boat and then getting to shore onto the dock which was now ten feet above our heads. Kelera managed to get by walking on a bamboo pole over the mud, Gail made it half-way before she stepped into the knee deep slew. Takai walked thru the muck and when he tried to climb up the rock wall, fell over backwards into the mud ending my hopes to get ashore unscathed, I had to jump in to save him from an unseemly death. We both stunk to high heaven on the way home to a shower.
1977 Dr Browney diagnosed bacterial ear infection and put me on penicllin. Te had a haircut (80¢) at Edinburg shops. Breezes came at 5:30PM for a visit, then Sanders arrived.
1980 T - CUB for the first time - you put the price on yourself with a grease pen.
1985 M - Asked Prasad how he could stay in YMCA in Singapore since he was a Hindu. He thought the "C" stood for "cultural". Nigel Mason, complete with beard, showed up. He had seen Gail in town. He is just up from farming in Otrohanga. He is on the Papakura Men's basketball rep team and wants me to coach them. [ed - a big compliment because he quit the school team when he was the captain and he also had himself moved from my math class - we didn't see eye-to-eye].
1986 T - Val Coffey's shoe got caught on her dress as she was getting off the bus and I had to grab hold of her to keep her from falling. When I got home Anil was waiting. I brought him to his motel and helped him shift his gear to the unit.
1988 Went to Alderson's to get a tractor-trailer tour of the changes. Fence along driveway, new stock yard, plum trees pruned back to trunk.
1994 Sahara Tent with the TP crowd. Chatted with Alan and Nola who were there. Mike Hickford told me about his role in an episode of High Tide - he was a bad guy on a boat. I had yaprak dolma (creek leaf filled with rice), jajiko (cucumber in yoghurt with garlic mint dip), shish taouk (chicken shishkabob) and namoura (seminola cake). Gail had manta dolam (mushrooms), serai taouk (shredded chicken) and a baklava. A belly dancer shook for about 30 minutes. Very slow service - like forever. Pretty sure they had forgotten us. Wood burner smoked up the place and I had to go outside. Turned out to be closed flue. At least the wine was good - a '92 Jacobs Creek chardonnay.
2005 WFSN then bought a bed for Ne in Waiuku and when I got home with the mattress there was Brundell, back today from 7 weeks overseas. Roped him into getting the base with me. Told us about his adventures in So Africa and Europe.
2013 M - Removed dead passionfruit vines. Won the cribbage games. Finished reading Happiness Is a Choice.
2015 W - Peter Wilkins who is fumigating a boat for termites dropped in with a bottle of Rabbit Ranch '13 pinot noir and a very enjoyable evening of catching up. His house has extensive damage from the earthquake. We also had a piece of Mother's Day cheese cake.
2016 F - Anna over for Scrabble with David. Went for a walk with David. Ne over for Eight Minute Empire Legends, supper and then our first go with Onward To Venus. Apparently I play tested it but I don't recall it.
2018 Su - Castles of Burgundy. Reuben sandwiches. Stone Age. Affagatos. Gail went to bed and we played Dominion. Ne left - Te and I played Plethora. Watched Adelaide Showdown with each team making mighty comebacks and the lead changing twice in the last 40 seconds (final minutes).
2019 M - Up at 11AM. Won Terraforming with my highest score ever. Colleen called. Bev still in hospital with infection, so we cancelled our visit for tomorrow and I sent off an update to the TP gang.
2020 W - Day 7 of Level 2 and planes are back over the house. First walk (40 min) in two months.
